Ginger & Garlic – Chinatown, HI

Ginger & Garlic used to be my favorite dim sum restaurant. Hard for me to say used to be…it’s still one I will go to but the quality has really gone downhill in recent times. I went about a month ago? Found the dimsum to be much smaller than before and the restaurant just seems not to be aging well. It definitely did not make me want to return soon. Here’s some dim sum items we got!

Baked Egg Custard Tart | $5.50

Good stuff! I love this.

Deep Fried Taro | $5.50

Basic – nothing special.

Siu Mai | $5.50

Good, not great. I feel like they used to make it really well. Maybe the original chef left…

Seafood Bundle in Bean Curd | $6.50

One of my must have dim sum items. There’s another dim sum restaurant that I don’t want to name that is opening locations left and right and I don’t think they have this on their dim sum menu. What a shame! I love it.

Seafood Chow Mein | $15.95

Another must have item for me at dim sum, seafood chow mein. The aforementioned restaurant chain also doesn’t have this? This is a staple for me! Unless that restaurant chain ups their game, I’m good. I wasn’t impressed with their dim sum anyhow.

  1. I went there for a takeout order but I forget what it was. I think it was something on cake noodle but it must not have been memorable. I do like their name though. I walked in because the Laos Market next to them was closed and I was hungry.

bummer the quality has gone down

Love me some dim sum but I don’t know what things are, and due to self allergies makes things worse cuz Cantonese cooking has shrimp like in six mai. I want to one next to the river in the cultural Plaza with a mandarin speaking friend and she’ll be grabbing baskets left and right that had no seafood and it was mind blowing good stuff. The problem was she had her toddler kid and in-laws and she was grabbing food left and right for our table. She was super busy and I couldn’t ask her the names of the dishes. She’d just tell me ‘No more seafood’ and put the basket in front of me. I wisely shaddup and ate. This wasn’t stuff I ever saw or ate before. I had no clue. And she’ll be telling the ladies what she wanted and they’ll get it. She was a blur of motion and it was a quiet hectic chaos. All I know at the end was there was lot of baskets. It was a memorable meal but no knowledge of what I ate. So odd. Plus none of her family spoke English so it was just silent. They didn’t even talk to each other. She got busy with her restaurants so lost touch with her. N
