Mixed Plate Friday

Hey folks! A shorter post this Friday…just wanted to share small kine stuff.

Izumi Oden Konbuiri (Don Quijote Kaheka) | $6.49

For the folks who want to see the nutritional facts!

Here is the oden placed in a bowl and heat…get one egg too!

I don’t know if it was on my blog before but I once bought one of those Korean Ginseng Chickens from Don Q’s frozen section. It was not a good decision and I got a bad stomachache afterwards. Well you would think I would have learned my lesson but I didn’t, I really wanted to try this. This is not sold frozen, it’s sold in the refrigerated section (yikes?). I can trust the fish cake and such but I thought the egg would be iffy. Well the egg was just fine! No stomachache and the whole dish tasted great. And look closely, no more even gray ring around the yolk. How do they do it?? No complaints here.

One of my favorite cakes is the Berry Chantilly Cake from Whole Foods. The first time I tried it, I was in love. Fresh berries are on top of the cake and also throughout the inner layers of the cake. The frosting? Oh let me tell you about the frosting, it’s a wonderful almond mascarpone frosting. So light and delicious with a wonderful hint of almond (think almond float kine almond taste). I loved it…and since I don’t like plain whipped cream – the almond frosting really made it for me. Well, hate to be the messenger of bad news…things have changed! I got this cake about a week ago and the almond taste is like FAINT now. My friend shared that she got late last year and could hardly taste the almond too so I don’t think my experience was a fluke. So disappointing. 🙁 But I guess the silver lining is that I won’t be buying an entire cake to eat anymore…hahaha ugh! And yes, we wrote on the cake ourselves…and no, our handwriting is not that much better non-frosting style.

Jalna and Dd, I can’t express enough how much we love this Chipotle Tri Tip Roast recipe. This is now the most highly requested recipe I make. It’s so easy, so flavorful and just so satisfying. I’ve adjusted the recipe to feed an army…it’s just winners. Thank you again for sharing such a great recipe!!!

Ho, you are brave to try that oden, Jenny! But as long as it was kept at optimum refrigerated temperatures throughout the shipping & delivery process, you should be good because the EXPIRATION is a jaw dropping October 16, 2021!!!! Sorry, felt the need to emphasize that date. How is that even possible with an egg? I’m glad you featured the Whole Foods cake as I was thinking about ordering it. The picture online shows it as being mounded with a lot of fruit, not just (ahem) garnished like your cake. That meat looks super good and perfectly cooked. Enjoy your weekend!

lol the things I do for you folks! Ah who am I kidding, I would have eaten that even if I didn’t share it on the blog. Oh wow, I didn’t even notice the long expiration date. That makes me even more weary lol but too late I already ate em.

If you get the cake, please do let me know how it goes! The meat is super good, I would highly recommend making it! Great to hear from you Arlene, hope you’re doing well!

bummer the frosting lost its almond flavor. so glad you didn’t get a stomachache from the oden, the Japanese have egg stuff down to a science!

I know! I am actually looking up cake recipes to try to make this cake myself…that’s dangerous…but I need my almond marscapone! The oden egg was okay but still small kind rubbery…I need to get back to Japan to eat egg dishes soon. I am going stir crazy!

OMG Jenny, Dd will be tickled when I show her this post. You are so welcome. I love the writing on your cake . . . so cute!

    • Jenny

Hahaha Dd is the best! Her family is so lucky to get to eat her cooking! Thanks for the compliment on the writing, I have bad nightmare flashbacks of when I used to work at a ice cream shop and feared anytime anyone asked for writing on a cake because I have awful handwriting. I was just a highschooler so maybe I caught a break from that. 🙂

Hi Dd! Thank you so much for the birthday wishes! And yes, anytime Jalna posts your recipes – I gotta pay attention! I haven’t been able to make a lot of the recipes yet but if it’s from you, I know it’s gonna be winners!!!

  5. Your posts always make me hungry. Not only do you know how to order food, you also cook. I am a take out queen that really needs to eat better.

Ahhh but what’s good about ordering out is that we are supporting local business! That’s what I tell myself when I order out which is more than you think too!
