Mixed Plate Friday

Island Glazed Assorted Donuts

I’ve been wanting to try Island Glazed for such a long time but they are located out in Aiea and I am never out there so imagine my surprise when we got a special treat surprise at work! And we got a mix of their coolest flavors! So thankful to work with such nice people. They have really interesting flavors like strawberry mango, lihing pineapple, etc. Good donuts! The office ate them up!

Mixed Mushroom Crisps | $8.78

I’ve talked about this brand before because when I went to Korea, the sold their garlic bread potato wedges at Costco and that was GOBBLED up. No garlic bread potato wedges in the U.S. (yet) but I found these mixed mushroom crisps at Sam’s Club! It’s very interesting. Similar to the wedges, the mushrooms are whole but somehow taste hollow? How do I explain that? You bite into it and it’s a bit hard to crunch down onto but it just doesn’t have a solid meaty mushroom structure. Hard to explain, you gotta try it yourself. Interesting taste, strong umami! Give it a try at Sam’s Club while we still have it!

Le’s Banh Mi – Saigon Special add Roast Pork | $11.50 + $2.00

Yes, I went back again (lol) but this time I wanted to show you a cross section of this glorious sandwich. Yummy…

Costco used to sell the mushroom chips but I think it was only shiitake. Maybe freeze dried to get that airy texture but how does that hard crunch come in. I liked it.
Now I want a banh mi!
donut (ahaha, punny) know why I’m not a donut fan but I love cinnamon rolls and apple fritters

I think I tried those before! The best way I can describe these are that they kind of taste like bread lol. It’s odd. But yes I believe they are freeze dried which is why it’s an interesting texture. They also have a veggie mix which we bought to try. I think the mushroom one better.

Cinnamon rolls and apple fritters are great. I love apple napples too. I’m not adventurous with donuts, I like regular glazed.

  2. My favorite donut is glazed. Kimuraya Bakery across the Kaimuki Library had the best glazed donuts – sweet, light, airy and big. But then they closed down. Sigh. Zippy’s is a pretty good second best. Not too greasy and just right.

I’ve been down with a bad cold this week and having hot and sour soup with an extra dash of apple cider vinegar every day for days. Maybe I need a banh mi sandwich from Le’s too! Hmmm. My cough is pretty much subsided today…

Aunty, have you tried Donut King at market city? Not expensive and just plain good donuts. Nothing too fancy, I love their donuts. Please try!

And oh no, I hope you’re feeling better. I know the flu has been going around hitting people strongly. My family got hit hard but I’ve been lucky.

Okay! I will try Donut King the next time I go to Yi Xin Cafe for lunch. I never went in because they had bacon donuts – which I thought was too weird.

Thanks, my cold is SO much better and I am eating and eating. Looking forward to Le’s banh mi the next time I go to Sam’s.

I know there are all these great donut places on social media..pricey too. I tried a trending one years ago cuz it had funky names like unicorn farts or some such. Over $5 per and made fresh. Yeah…not so much. It was just a dense, thick overly sweet donut. Tastes like Safeway to me. I do love Zippy’s crispy donut, it’s light and airy and not too sweet. American sweets are overwhelming sweet. I liked your recommendation of 711’s but then they glazed it and just killed it, too sweet. I noticed it’s no longer sold there or the boxed ones…they were made by the Patisserie. I even wrote them, but no response.

N! I commented to aunty below too but if you are able to, try Donut King in Market City Shopping Center. I like the classic donuts and they have that and just make them good and I think the prices are good too. I’m not into those fancy donuts out there, give me a classic glazed donut and I’m good to go. Donut King has a good recipe, nice soft donut. Not doughy.

711 stopped carrying those donuts? Shucks. I haven’t been going to 711 as much because I’ve been doing a lot more cooking to save money and eat healthier. I will say that donut king is probably better than the Patisserie ones!
