Fukuya Delicatessen | Moilili, HI

Now that it’s summer time, I am more willing to venture out to various places because I know traffic won’t be a nightmare. Don’t you love summer? Less people, less traffic. I am a total introvert. Anyway, Fukuya Deli is located close to my work place but I hardly go because it’s always so crowded. Well, lazy me didn’t think to just park on the road. Why do I stress about parking in their lot? I’m so crazy. I go to work early anyway so I can go right when they open.

Medium Mixed Sushi | $8.20

Got this to share with some coworkers, ate a maki sushi and cone sushi myself. Was okay, nothing special.

Hot Dog Roll (lol) | $7.40

Of course I bought the hot dog roll cause I’m crazy. I didn’t even know they include a piece of spam in it? How funny. Fun to try but wouldn’t get it again.

2x Chow Fun | $7.50
1 Fried Chicken Thigh | $3.75
1 Spicy Tofu Stir- fry | $3.30
1 Nishime | $3.30

My first lunch plate – was good. I always gotta try the chow fun at the different delicatessens. I think what inspired the visit was someone bringing chow fun to a gathering and me trying to figure out where it was from. The chow fun is pretty on-par with Toshi’s. I liked the tofu stir-fry a lot and I love nishime – they do it well, the vegetables are nice and soft but not mushy.

1 Fried Noodles | $3.75
1 Chow Fun | $3.75
1 Nori Fried Chicken | $4.25
1 Ahi Burger | $4.00
1 Spicy Tofu Stir-fry | $3.30
1 Nishime | $3.30

Second lunch plate – this time I wanted to try the fried noodles to see if they were good. They were! The nori chicken is good but mochiko chicken has never been a favorite. I got the tofu and nishime again cause I like it! It’s a delicatessen so it’s pricey as usual but oh! I almost didn’t talk about it but the ahi burger is so good! Nicely seasoned and so soft, I would definitely get the ahi burger again!

  1. I like Fukuya’s but the prices!!! (shame, but, get my fix at funerals)
Since I almost always order the same things, I think Gulicks gives way more per serving so it covers 2 lunches easily. long beans with pork, eggplant with pork, sweet sour ribs and whatever noodle, chow fun or fried noodles

    • Haha I’ll knock on wood that I don’t go to funerals so gotta get my own fix. Dang I really gotta get back out to Gulick. I really miss their king street location!

  2. Was not that impressed with them, but maybe it’s cuz I don’t go early. The drawback of being a night owl. I don’t like mochiko chicken but love their nori chicken. They are the closest to me but they sell out too fast. I end up at Gulick, my tried and true. Maybe a 3rd trip is in order…when I wake up early

    • Ahhhh they must have a lot less when it gets later in the day too. Nori chicken was good! Another one for gulick…time for me to make a post!

  3. I’m like Vicki – get my fix at funerals. Once in a great great while I’ll stop in there but the price sticker shock is electrifying, like Sekiyas (I love the hot dogs.)
Kaneohe has a really good deli across from Koolau Farms. Joyce and somebody. Super ono, pricey, but they give kind of plenty. Now I am hungry for okazu!

  4. Haven’t been to Fukuya in ages. Good to know they are still going strong as I haven’t been in over a decade. Been going from the 60’s until I left in the late 90’s and they’ve always been on the pricy side. And yes, I used them to cater my late mom’s wake.

    • Yes definitely going strong! I fear succession issues with Toshi’s but I think fukuya will do just fine!

Plenty old school places closing down so I find comfort in visiting them.

  5. I’ve been gone from HNL for over 35 years now, but I still love okazuya food. Fukuya’s has been around for longer than that! Whenever I go back to HNL, I normally don’t eat okazuya food since it is now so expensive. One of these days, I will splurge with my current wife and get some for her to try. LOL!

    • Hahaha yes please do! Pricey but worth it to support okazuyas! We gotta keep these restaurants in business! Tastes like home cooking.
