Nishiki Market – Kyoto, Japan

My favorite place to visit while in Kyoto!
Green Tea Dessert with Tea
Check out the timer! That’s when you know your tea is ready to pour and drink!
Kind of looks like a make-up brush yeah?

Doesn’t this look beautiful? It tasted as good as it looks! Enjoyed it!

Got this the first time I ever went to Nishiki and have kept up the tradition ever since. I think I got it from the wrong shop this time, I don’t remember it sitting in broth. Though it was nice to sip this hot broth in the cold weather. For a food market, there are NO rubbish cans anywhere. It’s quite frustrating.

Baby Octopus

This is a bit morbid. It’s a small octopus and the head is hollowed out and stuffed with a quail egg. The flavor of the octopus coated in a sweet sauce…can smell kind of stinky (like a stinky fish) but when you eat it, it’s not stinky at all. This is also a traditional snack for me!

Ahaha. I eat that octopus too!
I recently read that Nishiki Market vendors and regulars are upset because it has become so touristy who only look and try to grab samples and dont buy anything crowding all the stalls for actual customers. Also how many eat when they walk (supposedly no-no in Japan) so they dirty other customers by bumping into them.
I think that’s why no trashcans. Traditionally everything was meant to be taken home to eat.

Haha it’s good right! Oh man, I definitely feel that anger. And I don’t even sample! I just like buy and eat! And yeah some vendors don’t even let you eat at their stall! I’ve taken to bringing plastic bag with me to make my own trash bag. Wish I lived in Japan, I would take everything home to eat!

I heard that the sarin attack was the reason for no trashcans.
Sheesh, the vendors want you to buy but don’t want you to eat there!
oh yah, and I always get the tofu donuts and ice cream! At least they are off to the side so can stand in that alley and eat.

no trash cans anywhere because of the 1995 subway cyanide attack…love all your snack choices…I usually buy tofu/okara donuts whenever I visit Nishiki.
