Superb Sushi – Kalihi, HI

I know I posted about Superb Sushi before but I can’t stop raving about their food. And I love that the front line person remembers me! It’s very sweet to me, as antisocial that I am. Their sushi is great and their ahi poke is some of the best I’ve tasted. It’s seasoned wonderfully. I also like that they serve up the ahi poke bowl with the spicy sauce on the side – that really works out for people who cannot handle spice. I got their combo this past visit and it was great as always, they serve it up with miso soup. I hope you folks get to give them a try, I highly recommend it!

Ahi & Vegetable – Kalihi, HI

Long time no see folks! I hope you are all doing well. Everyone is probably busily getting ready for Thanksgiving huh? The past 2 weeks were probably the worst of the semester. Nonstop events and my final presentations. The presentations are all done and the bulk of the events are done. We had a craft fair this past Friday and I made my famous kimchee fried rice and holiday bowtie pasta. I don’t mean to toot my own horn but I will, the kimchee fried rice was the best yet. I paid for my own order (lol) and it was heavenly. I make some bomb fried rice. It was hard work prepping and cooking it but it was all worth it.

I hope to do some cooking soon so I can share new recipes again. I won’t be making a turkey this year, maybe some oven baked chicken tenders. Random yah? It’s okay, I’m hoping they will be delish. Quick post today to share a previous lunch from Ahi & Vegetable, they opened a fairly new shop in Kalihi. They basically specialize in seafood..and not much else. Here goes!

141125-02Sashimi Combo on Rice – $15.00

I don’t think this is on the main menu but look at that fish! Looks amazing. My coworker got this and she LOVED it. A bit pricey for lunch but did you look at the fish??

141125-03Bento B5 – $11.00

This bento comes with spicy ahi, ahi poke and BBQ chicken over rice. I think it’s a bit pricey and the cuts of fish isn’t that great. Their spicy ahi has a different texture from usual spicy ahi – it’s more of a mush than the cubes of ahi you’re used to. This bento set also comes with a miso soup. Would I get it again? Not likely….

Ahi Assassins Fish Co. – Moilili, HI

The weather has been lovely this weekend! Last night as I walked out of a store, I actually felt windchill. Wind. Chill. It was great. Last night was positively chilly, I actually had to grab my blanket. This is fantastic. And Sunday? The nice weather continued, nice winds and not too hot temperatures. Please please please continue! So here I am, updating some posts for my blog. Yesterday was lost, there was a Law and Order Special Victims Unit marathon on and I can’t possibly study when that is going on. Today, what have I done so far? I tried to continue my presentation but can’t concentrate. I started my final paper a bit and well here I am updating my blog. Hehe…

Ahi Assassins Fish Co. has been open for less than a month and they are getting stellar reviews on Yelp. I love that they are so close to where I work so I got to give them a try for lunch. Their parking lot is a bit small but I was able to get a spot before it got busy! The most appealing part about this shop is that the owners are fishermen! How much fresher can that be? They also charge quite little to me…all good stuff! Let’s get to the pictures, shall we?

Shoyu Garlic Ahi Poke Bowl – $7.00

I just realized I forgot to take a picture of my Spicy Ahi bowl! Good stuff, great slices of fish. The spicy ahi, it’s definitely spicier than other spicy ahi! So when they say spicy at this place, they mean it.

141110-05

Pan Seared Ahi with Garlic Plate – $8.00

141110-06Yes, that’s garlic on top. Garlic garlic garlic.

141110-07Very raw inside. I like that so it’s okay.

I originally wanted to get the baked ahi stuffed crab but they were all out, that made me sad. So I settled for this, great piece of fish. Great portion but the taste was unfortunately not there. The ahi was not seasoned and I feel like they just sauteed a bunch of unseasoned garlic and put it on top. I was so disappointed that the ahi had no seasoning – I had to add a dressing to eat this meal. If I get this next time, I will probably try the furikake one.

Ono Seafood – Kapahulu, HI

The infamous Ono Seafood on Kapahulu. I have never been there before and always feared going because of the fear of no parking! Luckily, I decided to give it a try the other week and realized they have pretty good parking! There is only about 2 spots in front of the shop but the empty lot next door gives you a few more stalls so we were good. This is a super small shop, it really is grab and go. They specialize in poke and JUST poke which is fine since they do such a dang good job at it. Do I wish I could get a side of roast pork with it…yes, but I’ll live. It’s a great deal because you get a poke bowl and it comes with a drink! Here are the ones we tried…

Hawaiian Style Poke Bowl

140603-02Spicy Ahi Poke Bowl!
My dish, so good! There is a lot of onions as shown in the picture but there definitely wasn’t a strong bite so it was good. I would definitely return here to have some again!

Gyotaku Restaurant – Honolulu, HI

I’m rounding up all the food pictures I have in the recent weeks and I have been eating out a LOT. This comes at a bad time because I need to save money. Lots of it! I already have posts queued up for the week! So get ready for a full week of food in your face, although when would you expect any different from my blog right? 🙂 Here’s a recent outing I had at Gyotaku. Just a quick meal and post of the food.

140303-02Ahi Poke Bowl – yummy!

140303-03I got it with with tempura just because – they make a pretty okay tempura.

140303-01Kid’s Karaage Meal – it comes with a drink and a dessert. It also comes with a free toy but the past two times, I’ve had to outright ask for it.  And it’s just a basket of cheap toys from Oriental Trading Company.

I find the service to be lacking this visit. I’ve had ups and downs coming to this restaurant. We were ignored basically all night and our food took a really long time. I was not too happy with this visit. The busboy was good and quick though.

The Cheesecake Factory – Waikiki, HI

I don’t have to tell you about The Cheesecake Factory do I? Of course I don’t.  I don’t have to tell you that this place is busy all the time with a line stretching across Waikiki. I don’t have to tell you that an hour and a half wait time is normal. So why is this place so popular? Must be the cheesecake. Well, it is mighty good cheesecake. The food is not bad either but it can be a bit pricey. I came for lunch on a weekday and hallelujah, we didn’t have to wait at all. First time ever. Let’s look at the pictures!

140201-01This. is. it. Fresh Strawberry Cheesecake.  Delicious!

140201-02The bread. They usually serve two breads, a sourdough bread and this sweet honey wheat bread. I don’t eat the sourdough so I just asked for all wheat.  Was gooood.

140201-03

140201-04Fried Calamari – it comes with a garlic aioli and cocktail sauce.  Delicious!

140201-07Ahi Poke – market price! Umm..market price always scares me. Hahaha but had to get em cause it was a special meal. It was very good and the guest of honor enjoyed it so it was well worth it.

140201-05140201-06Spicy Chicken Chipotle Pasta – Lunch Portion.  I took a chance on this dish, haven’t tried it before and wow was it good!  I could do without the deep fried stick thingies…but the actual pasta was so good.  The vegetables, chicken, sauce and pasta just worked so well together. We were both sooo stuffed at the end of this meal. Great lunch though.

Park in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center garage and you can get validation when you dine here. Make sure you pay at the parking machines by the elevators before you go to your car. They don’t have live attendants collecting money at the end anymore.

Mixed Don – Kuru Kuru Sushi

While I frequent Kuru Kuru Sushi – I have never ordered one of their dons until my last visit.  I used to watch as other tables got these mountains of spicy ahi/poke and just sit in envy.  I don’t know why I never ordered it, perhaps because if I were to ever eat that I would not be able to eat anything else?  Well, this time I had a partner in crime so I ordered it.  The taste was great, the photo opp even better.  Isn’t it glorious?
