Izakaya Torae Torae – Moilili, Hawaii

I have been so excited to try Izakaya Torae Torae since they opened up about two months ago! They are located in Moilili on McCully Street – it’s right next door to The Sushi Company and I believe they replaced a pizza place (correct me if I’m wrong). They do have parking stalls in front but it is extremely limited. Our meal was so good last night that I just had to post it up already! And how’s this for fate? A spot opened up as I was pulling in…smack dab right in front of the restaurant. It was meant to be. A warning to everyone, lots of pictures and…I definitely splurged for this meal. I have never tried Otoro before and decided to do so at this meal. No regrets!

140428-02Snow Crab and Corn Cream Croquette – $7.50

140428-03Lots of pictures of this dish on social media – how was it? I thought it was good, not great. It’s not like I could taste the crab in it so for me, it was just a cream croquette.

140428-04Pork Belly Kakuni – $8.95
Oh man, this was a great dish. Includes two good sized pieces of pork belly, daikon and a soft boiled egg. The broth tasted great – favorite meat dish of the night for sure. They have a pork belly kakuni don option – the broth on the rice would be amazing.

140428-11Ribeye Steak with Garlic Onion Sauce – $16.50

140428-12The garlic onion sauce being poured on…a bit pricey for this dish. I thought it was all right but nothing too special. The meat was tender and cooked to our specifications! I also enjoyed the bean sprouts/cabbage on the bottom, so a good dish all in all.

140428-05From left to right: Lanai Sweet Shrimp ($5.95), Hamachi ($2.95) and King Salmon Nigiri ($2.50)
This was Kristian’s selection so I will let him share his comments if he so wishes. 🙂

140428-06Shrimp Head! This is the head from the Lanai Sweet Shrimp nigiri, they offer it to you fried up with a slice of lemon. So crispy you can eat the entire head, shell and all!

140428-07From left to right: King Salmon ($2.50), Otoro (Market Price, lol), Uni Nigiri ($4.25)

140428-08I hadn’t had real salmon until I’ve had it this high quality. The freshness of the salmon, the buttery taste, you just can’t beat it. It was the cheaper option of the nigiri I had so I ordered one more. I think if I return, I would just order like 4 for myself..hahaha

140428-09Okay, I know I swore off uni pasta but I certainly didn’t swear off uni nigiri! It was very good – perfectly made. But if I had to choose between this or the salmon, I’ll get the salmon.

140428-10Star of the show! Otoro! This is the first time I have ever had this. Words cannot explain the experience. This will probably be one of the few times I have it in my life so I will forever savor it. Hehe…I was afraid to take the leap but am so glad I did. It literally melts in your mouth. I think I’m going to dream of it tonight.

Imanas Tei Restaurant – Honolulu, HI

My gosh, I’ve been wanting to try Imanas Tei for the longest time now! Finally had a chance the other week and took a chance by walking in. Firstly, don’t do that. They are always booked but they were willing to place us at the sushi bar as long as we could be out by 7 for the next reservation.  We said yes and there are no regrets! The meal was amazing. I’m pretty sure I pissed off the sushi chef in the beginning, and I feel bad. I had laid the menu open leaning against the counter and he kept saying something to me but I couldn’t hear him so he had to raise his voice. -_- My menu was blocking him from putting this down…

140302-01The serving dish for my sushi! That faux pas aside, the meal was extraordinary.

140302-02Grilled Beef Tongue. Delicious! Great taste and prepared well.

140302-03 Stewed Miso Based Beef – flavorful. This dish really packs a punch and I think it would go great over rice. Alone, I think it’s very strong.

140302-04

140302-05One of their signature dishes, Seafood Dynamite. It looks as good as it tastes. Also very flavorful – big chunks of seafood smothered in a creamy sauce.

140302-06Salmon Nigiri. Oh. My. God. I don’t think I’ve had good quality salmon until this meal. I mean seriously. This was my favorite of the night. It was so flavorful – what have I been eating all my life? I can’t believe how much better it was at Imanas. It was so good that I had to order another one. Definitely recommended.

140302-07Kaki Nigiri (Oyster) – it was good! But to be fair, this was served after the salmon and I was still thinking about the salmon. If you like fresh oysters, you’ll love this.

140302-08Unagi Roll. Very good, unagi and avocado served up nicely.

140302-09Spicy Tuna Roll. I just had to get my spicy tuna fix in. Honestly, I wouldn’t waste my time getting rolls next time. I would just want the nigiri!

140302-10Fresh Scallop Nigiri – delicious. Meaty, fresh, soft yet firm (does that make sense?) – highly recommended!

140302-11Mirugai (Geoduck Clam) Nigiri. I haven’t had geoduck clam in such a long time so I definitely wanted to try this. This is very expensive and while it tasted great, it is very pricey so I can’t recommend it fully. The taste of the clam is crunchy and has a good taste of the ocean which is what I always loved.

Obviously, the whole meal was amazing. And we were in and out in like an hour so they are very prompt with their service. The only downside to sitting at the sushi bar is that you not able to order their shabu shabu or nabe which is something they are also known for. I would definitely love to come to this restaurant again! Their parking is horrendous though, they share a very small lot with another popular restaurant which makes it worst! But I would definitely consider Imanas Tei as one of the best Japanese restaurants on the island.

Sushi Bay – Kapolei, HI

Sushi Bay is a fairly new sushi restaurant in the Kapolei Shopping Center. Anytime there is a new sushi anything – I’m down to clown. Okay, I don’t know where that phrase comes from, I heard it on Parks and Recreation and I really just wanted to give it a shot. Sushi Bay will undoubtedly be compared to Genki Sushi and Kuru Kuru Sushi. Well after trying it, I’d say it’s almost an exact copy to Kuru Kuru Sushi but dare I say…better! They do have a few more items than Kuru Kuru and serve the same big slices of fish as Kuru Kuru (Genki’s serving sizes pale in comparison to both).  Ahhh…let’s let the pictures tell the story.

140129-01Garlic Hamachi – $2.80, yummmmy…so good!

140129-02Onion Salmon – $2.80

140129-03

140129-04Hamachi – $2.80, there’s bits of green onion on this and in another dish. That’s the only small complaint, they’re a bit sloppy in that regard.

140129-05Ika – $1.50 (hi green onion/furikake again!)

140129-06Ahi Poke – $2.20, delicious! And it doesn’t come with limu which I prefer.

140129-07

140129-08Mix Don – $8.99, half Spicy Tuna and half Ahi Poke. Topped off with sliced onions and a slice of ahi and salmon. Heavenly.

140129-09

140129-10Avocado Chicken – $2.20, here is something new that I had to try!  Sorry that the avocado is browning but it was delicious!  It’s just a slice of avocado topped which karaage chicken. Well not just…it was good!

We came on a weekday at about 10:30 am and they already had diners! This place definitely picked up as we ate. I hope they get successful enough to branch out and open in town. They offer a lot of other noodle and rice bowl dishes too which I enjoy! If you’re ever out in Kapolei, give them a try. I like the Target and Costco in Kapolei because it’s much slower than the ones in town.

Gyotaku Japanese Restaurant – Honolulu, HI

Gyotaku is a great Japanese restaurant. I know it’s not one of the trendy fancy smancy restaurants, I think locals equate this restaurant with big family dinners or a place for older diners. While this restaurant is definitely great for those groups, I think it’s a great place to dine for anyone! Anytime I feel like having a delicious no frills Japanese meal, you will find me here. They have three locations but I prefer the location on King Street, I’ve had on and off experiences at the other two locations.

140122-04Poke Don – one of my favorite dishes!  Continue reading

Homemade Sushi Rolls

This is the first time I made legit sushi rolls.  This is something Gulick has that I’ve always liked.  It’s just a simple tuna roll with furikake and daikon.  So instead of paying Gulick money for part of a roll, why not make my own and eat as much as I want (though I shouldn’t)?  Well here are the results of me rolling my own!

131026-01First roll!  Yummy…

Jay’s Cafe – Honolulu, HI

Jay’s Cafe is a cute little shop that popped up on Liliha street across the street from McDonald’s by the pawn shop.  Apparently, they have two parking spots behind the building but they are HORRENDOUS.  I hated parking in it.  So I would highly suggest parking on the street if you can or if you go at night, possibly the lot next door?  As I was leaving that lot was empty because it’s an office building.  I don’t think it would hurt parking there if it’s off-office hours.

Jay’s Cafe serves up fresh baked cookies, desserts, cakes, shaved snow and sushi.  Yes, all of that is served from this shop.  Interesting right?  Well I already know from experience that I don’t like shaved snow – they serve that at Frostcity and I just never got into it.  The desserts look impressive but I wanted to feed my sushi craving.  If this place serves up good spicy tuna and garlic salmon – I don’t have to drive all the way out to Genki Sushi or Kuru Kuru!  The shop is run by a cute Chinese family.  When I went in, the parents were working away while the two little kids played (fought…lol) on their own.  It was a cute atmosphere for sure.  So how was the food??  Let’s take a look…

131021-01

Yummy…spicy tuna and garlic salmon.  Doesn’t that look amazing?

Mixed Don – Kuru Kuru Sushi

While I frequent Kuru Kuru Sushi – I have never ordered one of their dons until my last visit.  I used to watch as other tables got these mountains of spicy ahi/poke and just sit in envy.  I don’t know why I never ordered it, perhaps because if I were to ever eat that I would not be able to eat anything else?  Well, this time I had a partner in crime so I ordered it.  The taste was great, the photo opp even better.  Isn’t it glorious?
