Meatball – Kapahulu, HI

Meatball opened a few weeks ago in Kapahulu and I was super excited when it did! I love meatballs and thought a restaurant specializing in meatballs gotta be good! So how was it? A mixed bag. This could just be growing pains but I have a few thoughts. First, let me explain how to order. The base order includes the meatballs, your choice of sauce, and two small slices of garlic bread for $8.50.  Then to make it a “meal” which means adding starch, you have to pay $3.00. Yes, if you want to add plain rice – you would have to fork out $3.00.  Let’s get to the pictures and details.

140405-01Chicken Meatballs with Bacon Alfredo Sauce on Shells ($11.50)

140405-02This comes with 4 meatballs. My coworker got this dish and she was incredibly unhappy. The meatballs were just okay and they cooked the pasta all wrong. The shells were still hard and I don’t know if you can see it, but there are clumps of shells stuck together that were also not edible. She ended up throwing out most of the dish.

140405-03Vegetable Balls with Mushroom Gravy – $8.50

140405-04Another dish from my coworker. She didn’t have nice or mean things to say. I asked how the taste was and she mentioned it tasted like…vegetarian balls. Sometimes places are able to make their meatless dishes taste very meaty – I don’t think they succeeded here.

140405-05Beef Meatballs, Mushroom Gravy ($8.50), Rice ($3.00), Side Egg ($1.50) = $13.00

140405-06Here’s the garlic bread turned over. I guess it’s good that it’s made inhouse? It definitely was not memorable.

140405-07This dish is PRICEY. I can’t get over how much rice is and how little you get for this price. How’s the meatball? I will admit the beef meatball is very unique in flavor. There is a bit of game-y taste but definitely in a good way. I enjoyed the mixture of different meats in the meatball.

So do I recommend this place? I can’t say I can. It’s very pricey for a small quantity. I always try to give places another chance so perhaps I would return when they settle into their space a bit more.

Hokkaido Ramen Santouka – Honolulu, HI

Another post on Hokkaido Ramen Santouka! I’ve been back at least twice since my first bad experience. Service has gotten better and it’s not as busy as it has been in the past. I think the ramen is good – but not the best. I actually went to Japanese Kai Ramen this week and that might be my current favorite. I’ll have a post up on that one next week sometime. Let me share the pictures from my newest visit to Hokkaido, our eyes were bigger than our stomachs and we ordered the bigger size…by the way, my first visit is detailed here.

140404-01Miso Ramen

140404-02You really do feast with your eyes first…doesn’t this look delicious? My friend had this dish, she enjoys the broth and char siu. I think she prefers a firmer noodle but I wonder…maybe next time we could ask for firmer noodles. I think they would comply!

140404-03Toroniku Kara Miso Ramen

140404-04Red hot! Well not for me, but it looks red hot!

140404-05Toroniku. This is the limited quantity special each day. The char siu made of the pork cheeks which is extra tender and soft…so good yet so bad for you.  They leave the char siu off of the broth I think to preserve the softness and prevent overcooking.

140404-06Not sure why they leave the other toppings off too. Here are the toppings I tried to place nicely. Good dish, broth definitely looks more spicy than it actually is. I still say it’s great to see these new Japanese ramen shops pop up. Have you folks tried them all yet? 🙂

Vanilla Cupcake with Strawberry Guava Jam Frosting

I must confess. I work with a master-baker. He works so hard to make wonderful desserts – all from SCRATCH. No cake mix, no funny stuff. I give him a lot of credit, it’s not easy baking from scratch but he does and he does it great. Here’s a recent cupcake he shared with me.

140403-01

140403-02

140403-03

So how was it? Good as always. Do you see the specks of black in the cake? That’s fresh vanilla. Fresh vanilla people! My only feedback to him was that the cake was a bit dense and dry. Not sure if it was the recipe or how long ago it was made (only like 2 days old!) but other than that – so awesome. I really wish I were rich so I could open up a bakery for this guy to fill everyone’s dessert deficiency.

Recipe: Jean-Georges’s Fried Rice

I first saw this recipe a few years back when I saw it on Mark Bittman’s cooking podcasts. I was very interested in trying this fried rice recipe, it is a very simple recipe but looks absolutely delicious. I’ll share the link to his video at the end of this post but I do not suggest using the amount of shoyu and sesame oil. That’s too much!

140402-01My first time using leeks! Have you used one before? It looks a lot like the big Japanese negi onion but it’s definitely not the same. Also, you cannot use the green part at all – it is very tough!

140402-02Leeks sliced up and ready to sizzle…

140402-03Minced garlic and ginger. Lots of minced garlic and ginger.

140402-04Fry the ginger and garlic in oil until they are golden and crispy.

140402-05Oh yeah…almost there! Once they are golden brown, you drain them and let them sit out a bit while you cook the rest of the dish. Letting it rest a bit lets them get even crunchier!

140402-06I couldn’t waste the aromatic ginger/garlic oil so I used it to make the fried rice! Here are the leeks ready to be sautéed.

140402-07This recipe is SO easy to make. It’s very simple in how it’s made but oh so delicious. I topped mine off with a fried egg too. I’ll share the recipe and video below with a few tips.

Jean-Georges’s Fried Rice

  • 1/2 cup peanut oil if you’re Mark Bittman, chicken fat if you’re Jean-Georges (Corn Oil if you’re Jenny)
  • 2 tablespoons minced garlic (an entire bulb if you’re Jenny)
  • 2 tablespoons minced ginger (a medium sized piece if you’re Jenny)
  • Salt (Jenny didn’t use this)
  • 2 cups thinly sliced leeks, white and light green parts only, rinsed and dried (I didn’t have two cups – I only used one stalk of leek)
  • 4 cups cooked rice, preferably jasmine, at room temperature (see note below)
  • 4 large eggs (or as many eggs as people)
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 4 teaspoons soy sauce
  1. In a large skillet, heat 1/4 cup oil over medium heat. Add garlic and ginger and cook, stirring occasionally, until crisp and brown. With a slotted spoon, transfer to paper towels and salt lightly. Alternately, you can pour the oil into a heat-proof bowl through a fine-mesh strainer, then return the flavorful oil to the pan, reserving the ginger and garlic bits.
  2. Reduce heat under skillet to medium-low and add 2 tablespoons oil and leeks. Cook about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until very tender but not browned. Season lightly with salt.
  3. Raise heat to medium and add rice. Cook, stirring well, until heated through. Season to taste with salt.
  4. In a nonstick skillet, fry eggs in remaining oil, sunny-side-up, until edges are set but yolk is still runny.
  5. Divide rice among four dishes. Top each with an egg and drizzle with 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil and 1 teaspoon soy sauce. Sprinkle crisped garlic and ginger over everything and serve.
  6. Note: Use leftover cooked rice if you have it. Here are some tips if you’re cooking the rice fresh, to make sure it isn’t too soggy: When the cook time is done, leave the rice undisturbed in the pot (uncovered) for 5 minutes. Spread the rice on a tray (or two) to dry out. While you prep the rest of the ingredients, put it by an open window or a fan, or pop the tray in the fridge or freezer if you have room. Jaden Hair at Steamy Kitchen also recommends starting with 1/4 to 1/3 less water when cooking the rice.

The Minimalist : Jean-Georges’s Fried Rice – Mark Bittman

Jenny’s notes:
– You must use Jasmine Rice or long grain rice – the medium grain rice I had was too mushy! Also, the rice must be at least a day old! It’s gotta be cold and hard!
– I added a splash of shoyu and sesame oil before eating – it’s really up to the person eating! This dish is so delicious and easy, but it’s the garlic/ginger crunch that makes it pop.

Char Hung Sut – Chinatown, HI

Char Hung Sut is located in a super safe neighborhood and serves up awesome food. April Fools! Okay only about the super safe neighborhood part. You gotta admit, Char Hung Sut’s location is in a less than desirable location but the food makes it well worth the trip. Can you believe I have never tried it until about a month ago? I’m definitely a fool for that. Everything I have had here has proven to be awesome. It’s also helpful that I go super early before work so I can just park on the street and jump in…free meter parking! I was amazed by the person who helped me. I think he’s the owner’s grandson. I ordered all kinds of stuff in random numbers and he magically added them all up on a piece of paper manually…then added tax all in his head. I was amazed. Then again, I’m terrible at math so anything would amaze me. He had talent!

140401-01Love the packaging. It’s becoming like a theme huh?

140401-02Taro Cake. Look at how thick this was! Definitely not the kind of taro cake I’m used to, but I’m not complaining. I thought it was interesting that they had a black bean sauce in it.

140401-03Look at all these nummies; pork hash, half moon and yip chai (with pork)!

140401-04Here’s the filling of the yip chai. Delicious. It’s also the same filling in the half moon – so good!

140401-05Chow Fun – $6.25

140401-06The most flavorful “haole” chow fun I have ever had. I call any chow fun haole if its not dark like the Chinese ones. This was SO good…so much flavor packed into these noodles. The garlic chives make a big difference. Definitely winners.

Decompress

Hey folks. I’ve spent the past two days decompressing from the conference I attended on Thursday and Friday. It’s been good. I’ve been able to rest and spend some time with family. Sorry for the lack of updates. I will try to work on some posts tomorrow night…or should I say tonight since it’s 2 am. 🙂 Just wanted to let you folks know that I am indeed alive and well. I hope you folks are all the same.

Kokoro-Tei – Moilili, HI

Okay wait. I gotta laugh…I looked up their Kokoro-Tei‘s website for this blog and couldn’t help but laugh at one of their pictures. It’s nothing bad, but if you know this place – when you walk in, their display cases are empty. It’s usually because they make your bento to order so it’s all fresh. I just found it funny that one of their main pictures includes a full display case. Maybe it’s just me. How are you folks doing? I’m participating in a conference today and tomorrow. Today was a bit rough – 12 hours. While I am exhausted, I feel like I’ve gained so much today. Tomorrow is gonna be a hard day, they will be challenging us quite a bit but this is what I signed up for and I am looking forward to it. Nervously looking forward to it.

Ho…today was so shame. I didn’t eat breakfast and they provided a breakfast of fresh fruit and doughnuts. I didn’t feel like doughnuts so I only ate a few pieces of fruit. My stomach was freaking growling all morning. One of them was SO loud that I had to apologize to my neighbor, I felt so bad! It’s shame too but what can I do? I can’t control it. Well I can. I will tomorrow by eating breakfast before the start – I’m not a big fan of continental breakfasts.

Anyway! Sorry for the tangent. We got some lunch at Kokoro-Tei last week and I wanted to share pictures with you! Their prices are incredibly reasonable and I feel like their bentos are super Japanese. I don’t know how that sounds to you, but let me share the pictures and explain.

140328-01Nori Sake Bento – $5.00

140328-02$5 bucks! It comes with a nice piece of salmon, a deep fried filet of fish and then a tempura style fish cake! Tell me that doesn’t look delicious! And I love the entire sheet of nori on the rice.

140328-03Hamburger Steak Bento – $6.50 (I think!)

140328-04My coworker enjoyed this bento a lot. She thought the hamburger was very flavorful.

140328-05I couldn’t decide on a bento so I ordered their omurice and wanted to try the ala carte order of Rib Eye Steak. Here is my steak, I asked for medium rare. What are your thoughts looking at this picture?

140328-06That’s not medium rare, Jenny. Yes, I agree. This was definitely well done. Over done. But luckily for them, it’s rib eye so the meat was still tender. The garlic sauce is one of about 3 choices, it was SALTY. Do not just pour it over the steak if you order this. A small dip is plenty.

140328-07Omurice – $5.50

140328-08Doesn’t that look amazing? It tasted crazy good. My food took 20 minutes – I was getting a bit frustrated as I watched as everyone who came in after me get their orders. I finally stepped up to the counter and asked what the hold up was. The cashier apologized to me and told me he made a mistake of taking my omurice order when he wasn’t supposed to so I think the kitchen was working hard to make this dish! I’m not sure why they didn’t just tell me it was a mistake, I could have ordered something different. But boy, was this worth the wait. I thought the demi glace would be too salty but it wasn’t at all. What a great dish. I think they run out of this dish early so order early!

I really enjoyed their food and would like to come back. $5.00 for that seafood bento was an incredible deal, I don’t see how they make a profit! Do you see what I mean about their bentos being super Japanese? Their bentos feel and taste authentic to what I think Japan would serve up, other bento shops have assimilated their meals to cater to Hawaii tastes more I think.

Happy Days Seafood Restaurant – Waialae, HI

Hey folks! Just wanted to share a recent lunch I had at Happy Days Seafood Restaurant. Definitely the go-to restaurant in the Kaimuki area. Their food is pretty on-par with the food served up in Chinatown so I do enjoy going there as much as I hate to admit it. I like them a lot better now than before. Here’s the pics!

140326-01Siu Mai – one of my favorite dim sum items. I always have to order this in every dim sum restaurant. Even though siu mai is such a common dish, every restaurant makes it so differently! Hawaii has the best ones for sure.

140326-02Hoi Sin Jak – some of these dim sum dishes, I don’t even know the English name because I order it in Chinese. I’ll transcribe the names of them like this one, hoi sin jak – literal translation is seafood bundle/packet. Check out the inside…

140326-03There’s shiitake mushroom, shrimp, a chunk of white fish…and depending on the restaurant, there might be a small scallop or some imitation crab throw in. It’s all wrapped up in tofu skin and steamed. So delicious…I definitely recommend this.

140326-04Pai Kwut (Black Bean Spareribs) – always winners. Always tender and flavorful – if I wasn’t eating dim sum, I would love to just eat this over a nice steaming bowl of rice.

140326-05Kuhl Choy Bang (Garlic Chive Pan Fried Dumpling) – another one of my favorites! It is filled with garlic chives and morsels of shrimp. They have two versions of this dish, one is a steamed dumpling version and this is a pan fried version. I prefer the pan fried version. Delish!

140326-06Hoy Sin Chow Mein – Seafood Chow Mein, this dish reminds me of my childhood and the Chinese parties I had to attend. My favorite noodle dish, the crispy noodles with the awesome seafood gravy…and so much seafood and veggies on top. It’s my absolute favorite, I’ve been on a cake noodle kick lately.

140326-07Ended the lunchtime feast with dessert from the Pillbox Pharmacy. Unexpected place to grab ice cream but they’ve got some of the best! I unknowingly took a pic with the Hawaii cone in full view. Pretty awesome yeah? 🙂

Earl Sandwich – Waialae, HI

So when I write my restaurant reviews, I struggle with putting Honolulu which basically almost everything is in or naming the neighborhood. I should stick to the neighborhood yeah? How is everyone doing? I hope you all had a great weekend! This weekend was so busy for me, had a lot to do! Sorry I didn’t have a post up for Sunday! This week is going to be a bit nuts too but luckily we get a day off on Wednesday (my apologies to those who do not get a day off). Have you folks been to Earl Sandwich yet? It’s a brand spanking new sandwich shop located in the same parking lot as Happy Days, Cafe Laufer, etc. They took over the spot of a BBQ joint and they are still very new! Great ratings on Yelp so far so I wanted to do a quick lunch order! Here are the results!

140324-01French Dip – Beef, Gruyere, Dijon, Fennel Onion Marmalade, and Au Jus – $8.00

140324-02Gotta get a look at the insides! Doesn’t that look amazing? For this particular visit, they forgot to pack the Au Jus. 🙁 Luckily, my coworker still liked the sandwich and said that it had so much flavor for him that he forgave the Au Ju mistake. Would definitely recommend, just check for the Au Jus before you leave!

140324-03Jamestown – Turkey, Mayo, Dijon, Lettuce, Tomato, Curried Yams, and Cranberry – $8.00

140324-04What a beautiful sandwich – I can see why the job title is sandwich artist. Well for this place anyway… 🙂

140324-05This sandwich was good. Not great but good. It’s an interesting combination – the curried yams, cranberry, turkey…it’s a whole lot of different flavors going on. Not too sold on the curried yams for this sandwich.

140324-06Goat Cheese – Herbed Goat Cheese, Sautéed Asparagus, Cherry Tomatoes, and Balsamic – $8.00

140324-07Look. At. That. Goat. Cheese. Oh sorry, herbed goat cheese. As a lover of goat cheese, this sandwich was calling me.

140324-08Oh yes…I don’t care if you can’t see the other ingredients. That’s just how much I love goat cheese.

140324-09How was the sandwich? Awesome. I didn’t even miss the meat – I just enjoyed the flavors and fresh vegetables in this sandwich! Highly recommended!

If you are ever in the Waialae area, I highly recommend this place. The sandwiches are great! The bread is fresh and very crusty. While I’m not usually a fan of hard bread, their sandwiches made it a-okay. They were pretty fast in making the sandwiches too! They are still starting up so help support them! We need to keep these quality places around.

Manoa Eats

I just wanted to share some recent eats on the UH Manoa campus. We’ve got some good eateries on-campus but here’s a quick post on a sort of hit and miss.

140322-01Thai Poke Bowl from Stirfresh. It sounded good at first, a thai version of poke on a bed of rice. It did not work. The lime, the cilantro, and red onions did not work well with the ahi. By the time I dug in, the fish was kind of heating up with the rice. The texture of the fish was not good. Not recommended.

140322-02Veal Cutlet from Simply Ono

140322-03My first time having veal! It wasn’t great but it definitely wasn’t bad. Tasted a bit like pork – it had a lot of herbs, not sure how much I loved that. I think a little goes a long way.
