The Day the Hot Dog Betrayed Me…

Oh you read that right. During my trip to Korea, in a crowded Edae Shopping Street…I met my match. A nice old Korean man was selling corn dogs covered with crinkle fries out of a cart. Let me repeat that, CRINKLE FRY ENCRUSTED CORN DOG. I had to get it. I did. You know what else I got? For those who have a faint heart, avert your eyes now. Diarrhea. This dang corn dog was not cooked enough. As I ate it, I thought it had melted cheese in the middle with the hot dog. Oh. That was raw batter. I suffered! Then I had to look up diarrhea medicine in Korean to show to a pharmacy. And yes, it’s just like the Korean dramas! You walk into the pharmacy store and get whatever medicine you need! I thought that was pretty cool. 🙂 The pharmacist who helped me was very nice.

Two Kinds of Fried Rice

Happy Saturday everyone! Isn’t it great? It’s been a busy week so I totally passed out at like 8:30 last night. No joke. Anyway, major cleaning going on today. I guess it’s good to get spring cleaning done early. Anyway, I just wanted to share a quick update. We had a big event the other week and had a LOT of rice leftover. I decided to make two types of fried rice for the office. Why two types? It’s because one of them had harm ha in it. For those who don’t know, harm ha is fermented shrimp paste and it is PUNGENT. I thank my coworkers for bearing with me and the smell of the harm ha. Although to be honest, it became the more popular choice! Mmm…just thinking about harm ha now…

140503-03It gets a bit crazy when you’re making fried rice so I didn’t get anymore prep shots in. Here is my homestyle Chinese fried rice. It includes harm ha and choy sum. Absolutely delish! Not sure how many people would be interested in this recipe. Once again, if you are – let me know and I’d be more than happy to share!

140503-04I didn’t even get an after shot of the kimchee fried rice! And I got super lazy with this recipe, I didn’t even chop up the kimchee. I used the Chongga Kimchi I bought from Costco. It was all right but not good enough for my kimchee fried rice…gotta get Queen’s Supermarket Kimchee for the best kimchee fried rice!

Taste of Manoa – Manoa, HI

Every semester, UH Manoa holds a Taste of Manoa festival. It’s great because they offer up $1 plates and the plates are very generous! They held one about two weeks ago in conjunction with the opening of the new recreation center. It was super crowded but I loved seeing the new recreation center, it took a while but I think everything looks great now!

The dishes they had were pretty good, but I ended up doubling up on a few because I didn’t like the soup or dessert. I’ll share two highlights! I forgot to take a picture of the chili cheese dog – that was good too!  Full size!

Pretty good and the fish was cooked perfectly!

Look at that! Only $1! Seriously, a great deal. And surprisingly, I enjoyed the cole slaw again. Am I starting to like cole slaw in general? Uh oh…

Rant

I was going to update with a quick food post today but I just had to share my day. I’ve been having not so great days lately, and it’s nothing specific going on – I just feel like I’m in a slump. Anyhow, I drove home today from work and as I approached the driveway to my house (it’s a shared driveway between different houses) – there were two Pacific Islander kids blocking the driveway. It was a sister and brother I assume, both must have been under the age of 10. They were blocking the lane but as I turned in, they moved off to the side. I look to the back and see the boy calling me the B word. This young kid. I stopped my car and got out. I usually do this anyway. I stop my car and get out to get our mail. The two kids were standing there. I’m looking at both in the eyes and you can tell the boy has a guilty but naughty ridden look on his face.

What did I end up doing? Well. I nicely said hi to both of them to which they both said hi as well. I asked how they were going and the sister and brother both say they are okay, the sister friendlier. I grab my mail, close the mailbox and wish them both a good night and she tells me, you too. I drive off and as I’m parking, I see they are both watching me. Not sure what to make of that but fine. What does one do in that scenerio anyway? I could have reacted poorly because I know for a fact the boy called me the b word, but what would that accomplish? Nothing. Might as well kill a person with kindness and hope they will pay it forward in the future. What happened certainly ruined my night but I feel good in how I handled it and in the end, I don’t feel anger – just a bit of sadness. You never know what people are going through in their lives to make them lash out the way they do.

I hope everyone has a fabulous Friday and weekend! Here’s a picture I took when I took a hike up the Makapuu Trail.

Vanilla Cupcake with Strawberry Guava Jam Frosting

I must confess. I work with a master-baker. He works so hard to make wonderful desserts – all from SCRATCH. No cake mix, no funny stuff. I give him a lot of credit, it’s not easy baking from scratch but he does and he does it great. Here’s a recent cupcake he shared with me.

So how was it? Good as always. Do you see the specks of black in the cake? That’s fresh vanilla. Fresh vanilla people! My only feedback to him was that the cake was a bit dense and dry. Not sure if it was the recipe or how long ago it was made (only like 2 days old!) but other than that – so awesome. I really wish I were rich so I could open up a bakery for this guy to fill everyone’s dessert deficiency.

Decompress

Hey folks. I’ve spent the past two days decompressing from the conference I attended on Thursday and Friday. It’s been good. I’ve been able to rest and spend some time with family. Sorry for the lack of updates. I will try to work on some posts tomorrow night…or should I say tonight since it’s 2 am. 🙂 Just wanted to let you folks know that I am indeed alive and well. I hope you folks are all the same.

Nature Republic – Peeling Foot Mask

This is the opposite of a food post. Any guys who read this post can go ahead and ignore this post but if you are interested in magic, read on! Hahaha. So I love the new Nature Republic store, it’s another Korean cosmetics company that is now in Hawaii. I think I enjoy their products more than Face Shop for what that’s worth. Anyhow, the store I like to go to is the Ala Moana location, it’s right next to Center Stage…I think it took over the Cathedral store.

The Lemon peeling foot mask instructs you to put on the plastic booties that have a water liquid in it. You leave it on for 60-90 minutes. I left it on for 90 minutes because my feet are BAD. Can you walk around with it? I say yes you can, but I would limit that. I didn’t want to puncture the booties and the liquid in the socks are really like water so easily to come out. After you keep them on for the 60-90 minutes, you rinse it off and go about your life. According to the package, your feet will start to peel in 4 days and continues up to 7 days after use.

I was super skeptical about it, who wouldn’t be?? Why does it start peeling after 4 days? Did they mean I have to use this 4 days straight?? Well the answer is, no you don’t use it for 4 days straight and yes, IT DID START PEELING AFTER 4 DAYS. It’s super weird to witness. My feet really looked the same for the first few days. Then 4th day, boom – peeling! I showed some coworkers the day after and they both said gross so like of course I didn’t wanna take pictures to show. They did say, while they thought it gross…they meant it in a good way cause they were surprised by it too!

It doesn’t hurt at all. Believe me. And underneath the peeling comes some nice baby skin. So it peels around your toes, and the entire bottom of your feet and heels. I really suggest you give it a try, it’s so cool. The bad thing? Your feet are peeling…so yeah…they are peeling, I think you can picture that.

140311-01This mask costs $5.90 – what a steal! I’ve seen similar ones at Don Quijote and they cost like nearly $20.

Homemade Korean Goodies

Hey folks. As I write this, I am at home hacking up a storm. I am coughing and my nose is like a dripping faucet. Sorry for the TMI – so while my brain is somewhat lucid, I don’t think my coworkers would appreciate me spreading germs at work. Yesterday was definitely the worst of it, I must have slept all day. I hope that today is the end to the worst of it. Hope you all are doing well! I heard the flu is going around so take care of yourself! Luckily, I think I only have a cold. Anyway, I wanted to share some banchan I got to try from my friend. This stuff was brought straight from Korea (don’t ask me how) from her in-laws. How lucky am I to get to try it? Very!

140310-03Here is the kimchee. Um. If you know me at all, you’ll know that I am a kimchee freak. I couldn’t really eat this. It was already very old and sour…and I think if you eat it, you will have to make it into some kind of pork stirfry or stew. I hope the kimchee is still good, I still have it but haven’t been able to eat it!

140310-01

140310-02Garlic! Check this out. My friend said that they use specially bought garlic…which are huge…and DELICIOUS. I don’t know how they made this but it had no raw taste! It was very crunchy and delicious. And how did they find garlic without the inner root?? Oh wait, do I just use junk garlic? Hehe…anyone know what this garlic is called in Korean?

Zippy’s Lau Lau

Quick update today. Just wanted to share a plate lunch I got from Zippy’s, they usually serve Hawaiian plates on Fridays. I was pleasantly surprised! It was ono! When I was a kid, I used to always think Zippy’s was such a rip-off. That’s probably because I had less money too…lol. Now while I don’t dine at Zippy’s a lot, I appreciate them being around and serving up consistently good comfort food.

140226-02I love luau leaves. Delicious.

Happy Saturday!

Yes! Thank god it’s the weekend. I had a very busy week so I am very happy to rest today. The past two nights, I’ve been coming home and like sleeping at or before 9. That’s crazy! But that’s how busy work has been. It’s gonna be busy for the next few weeks too but busy is good right? 🙂 I’ve been slowing down on my eating adventures, I need to pick it back up! Also now gonna try to save money but a meal out once a week ain’t too bad right? Well I was without a car for a week and counted on my cousin to take me to and from work…it was horrible without a car! I guess I really got spoiled cause I used to bus it all over. Anyway, I do enjoy walking and miss it a bit. When you’re driving, you miss out on a lot of details around you. Once, I decided to walk home from work and it let me appreciate so much more about my surroundings! Things that I just drove past when I’m in my car. This picture is an example of that. Last week as I was waiting for my ride, I saw this sprouting out from a wall! It was so pretty that I just had to capture it. I was sad to see it gone a few days later…but was happy I caught it when I did. Have a great weekend folks.
