Favorite Pasta Dish

For the longest time, I’ve been telling my friend about my favorite dish from Assaggio’s.  It’s not technically on the menu but I learned of this dish a few years back.  They have an appetizer called Hot Antipasto.  This hot antipasto is comprised of huge luscious pieces of seafood in a wonderful sauce.  It must have been the waitress who served us who said this is the best antipasto and that you can get it on pasta!  I took her word for it on my next visit and haven’t turned back since.  So the next time you go to Assaggio’s or Paesano (same menu!), order the Hot Antipasto on linguine.  Or whatever noodles you want but I like it on linguine.  Well after many suggestions, she finally ordered a few weeks ago and LOVED it!  She even sent me a picture so I’ll post it here.  All credit goes to her.  🙂

Tell me that doesn’t look amazing…

Poi Freshness?

I went to Costco the other day and decided to take down some information about the poi they sell for an event later on.  I noticed they put up a poi freshness chart which as I look at…can’t quite grasp.  I can tell the first day of the week is gonna be the best time to get it.  But what do the other days mean?  I certainly don’t think I would want it on Saturday – whatever orange means.  That’s the thing, they don’t even tell you what these colors correspond to!  Funny yeah?

More Dim Sum

I must be really trying to prove I’m Chinese.  I went to eat Dim Sum again!  So I just wanted to share a quick pic of the spread we got..

The usual fare for dim sum.  Do you see the fingers peeking out from the right?  Yup, that’s chicken feet.  Do you eat chicken feet?  I know a lot of people who steer clear of it.  For me, I’ve been fed chicken feet since I was a kid so I only learned what it was after the fact.  So…I do like it.  I have to admit if I wasn’t force fed this as a child I would probably never touch the stuff today.  It is really delicious and the way they prepare it for dim sum is so savory!  You’ve gotta try it at least once!

Recipe: Fresh Mochi

Yay.  I finally made some sweets this past week.  I wanted to make a treat for a colleague who was leaving – turns out he doesn’t even like mochi.  Hahaha well I wasn’t offended, not everyone likes mochi.  I got to share the mochi with coworkers and family and they all seemed to like it!  I made two types of mochi, a lilikoi mochi and a strawberry milk mochi.  It’s a plus and a minus that when I make common recipes that I like to make it in a way that isn’t served a lot.  That’s how I came to these two – also, I LOVE lilikoi.  The downfall is that I could easily fail at making uncommon recipes but luckily these came out okay!

Triple One – Honolulu, HI

I’ve been going to a bunch of hole in the walls lately and this is definitely a hole in the wall, or should I say apartment building?  Yes, this restaurant is the downstairs of an apartment building on Pensacola.  Triple One is located across the street from the Post Office on Pensacola.  I heard the two parking spots under the building are for the restaurant but I wasn’t sure so I went for street parking.  I went like near 6 pm so there was a lot of street parking. I assume that if you go during the day, you could sneak into the post office parking lot but you didn’t hear that from me.

Triple One’s menu focuses on noodles and fried rice.  Their prices are insanely cheap.  I heard they moved from Chinatown to this location.  I ordered two dishes to share.  Let’s take a look shall we?

Serving of Salad and Stress

It’s inevitable.  When it rains, it pours.  To top off a stressful week, I got a flat tire last night.  Great right?  And for me, I have this terrible phobia about tires.  I don’t know how it started but I am always afraid of my tires going out on me.  Do you ever see those tire scraps on the freeway?  Like how does that even happen?  It’s like huge pieces of the tire!  That freaks me out!  Anyhow, I got home last night and saw my back tire like flat to the ground.  I threw down my stuff and immediately drove to Costco.  I usually only like going to Costco Hawaii Kai for tire needs but this was an emergency and the closest Costco to me was in Iwilei.

So I get there with my flat barely in tact at about 5:30 pm.  I was told that they have stopped taking in cars and I was like…but it’s like flat.  He came to check it out and mentioned he could try to squeeze me in but no guarantee and if he can’t do it, he will put on my spare.  I said okay.  I mean what else could I do right?  So almost three hours later, I get a call and was told they couldn’t do the tire so I get my car.  Then I had to take it to Hawaii Kai today to get it fixed.  I was actually pretty surprised but the guys at Hawaii Kai couldn’t understand why Iwilei couldn’t just put the new tire on.  Then I started thinking about it and was like…yeah!  If they get time to put the spare why not the new tire??  Well what can I say right?  Hawaii Kai was busy too so I had to wait another hour and a half.  While I was waiting, one of the customers mentioned that Costco Iwilei has the biggest sales of tires NATIONWIDE.  Yes, our little island buys the most tires in the nation.  Then everyone made a crack about our potholes.

Sorry for the long paragraphs, just wanted to tell the story.  But while we’re on the subject of Costco, they started selling individual servings of salads that I currently LOVE.  The bad thing about Costco is that they are barely consistent with their stock of food.  I do hope they keep this one!  Let me share some pictures.

Made in Hawaii Foods Mochi – Honolulu, HI

I need to get back into the swing of things!  I’ll try to get some posts up and running tonight.  I am however going to make mochi tonight too!  I’ve made mochi before but it has always been the basics.  Butter Mochi…Coconut Custard Mochi, Chi Chi Dango, etc.  If I am ever in a mochi shop, I am always drawn to flavors that aren’t found elsewhere.  Well this is the perfect time to share the mochi I tried last week!  I scored a parking spot at Made in Hawaii Foods and bought their variety pack – it was marked off 25%.  LOL, I am Chinese after all.  This set included their Fresh Strawberry Mochi with azuki, chocolate truffle and Lilikoi (!!!) Cheesecake Mochi.  Let’s take a look…

Mighty Wings

Have you seen the new promotion for McDonald’s?  Fried Chicken Wings!  I had to give it a try, especially after they closed down the Dillingham KFC.  How could they do that?  I mean the only other KFC in the area is down on North King Street and there is no drive through.  That decision made no sense to me.  I guess it’s either be good and don’t eat fried chicken or head on over to Popeyes.

Anyway, the chicken wings are pretty good!  I wonder if it’s for a limited time.  Do you guys remember the time that McDonald’s tried to do plate lunches?  I thought it was a cool idea but it didn’t work out.  That’s too bad.  I still do think McDonald’s needs to carry their breakfast platters all day long.  I’d love to have breakfast for dinner every once in a while.  Anyway, here are some pictures of the Mighty Wings!

Happy October!

Do you know what October signals to me?  Fall!  I love Fall and Winter.  I know a lot of people get all mad about Christmas decorations being sold so early but I secretly love it.  I love it because Christmas is my most favorite holiday.  I used to Pandora Christmas music all year long, I was that hardcore.  Anyhow, Happy October!  Sorry I’ve been quiet, but I did kind of warn you guys that I had a few crazy weeks ahead of me.  I do want to take some time out to wish my friend Wendy a happy birthday.  I’m sorry you had to work but I hope you had a good day either way!

Sorry it’s going to be another short post.  I hope to get back into the swing of things end of this week?  I’ve got some stuff to do still so I haven’t been able to concentrate.  Let me share my sewing machine.  I bought my first sewing machine this past May and opened the box in September, lol.  Crazy right?  I’ve always wanted a sewing machine so I can do basic hem repairs on my clothes.  And no, I don’t want to use needle and thread.  Thank you.  Hahaha.  Anyway, the first thing I wanted to mend was this white skirt I have.  I finally mended my hem and guess what I see?  A freaking stain on the skirt!  And I’ve been bleaching and bleaching it to no avail!  I don’t even know what the stain it.  The closest way I can describe the stain is that…it almost looks rust stained.  So frustrating!  So I finally fix my skirt and it’s for nothing.  Sad ah?  Anyway, look at the first stitch I made.  LOL…have a great week everyone!
