Lucky Belly – Chinatown, HI

I got to get this story out before I start the post. I was so shaken this morning because an elderly man almost hit my car. I was driving straight on a road that had two lanes going in both directions. Suddenly as I’m driving, this silver corolla comes out of nowhere into my lane about to hit me. He must have drove out of a lot from the other side, cut two lanes and trying to get into my lane. I had to swerve and hit my brakes HARD. I kept beeping him and he didn’t even seem to realize what he did and even hear my beeping. That really shook me up, I hate slamming on my brakes, I feel like I am breaking my car. Then as we’re driving, I change into the right lane and guess what? HE DECIDES TO LANE CHANGE INTO MY CAR AGAIN. I couldn’t believe it. I was hopping mad and I just kept beeping like a mad woman and he finally realizes it and goes back into his own lane. God, I just sped up like a devil to get away from this man.

I know this sounds terrible but I feel like when people get to a certain age, they shouldn’t be allowed to drive. I know I’ll want to drive as long as I can but he was making a lot of poor decisions and didn’t even hear my loud beeps. It was crazy and I still feel shaken up right now from what happened. Sorry for the rant, I am just super bothered.

My real post today is sharing a meal we had at Lucky Belly recently. We were celebrating Administrative Professionals Day and our secretary wanted to eat here so there we were! The food was good but I would recommend going during their dinner service. Their lunch menu is extremely limited. I have a funny story about this. So we had one person pay the entire bill and collected from everyone afterwards. As we were calculating afterwards, we realized we totally jipped them on tip. Felt terrible so I offered to drive out to give them the rest of the tip. Ummm…the guy who got received the tip had a very whatever reaction to it. Why do I allow my morals to dictate my actions?? Oh yeah, because it’s the right thing to do. Monotone reactions aside, I am fine because it was the right thing to do. Well, let’s get to the pictures!

150621-01Lucky Bowl ($9) – bean sprouts, soft egg, wakame, sesame seeds, green onion & ginger

150621-02

150621-03

150621-04Belly Bowl ($14) – Lucky bowl contents plus belly, bacon & sausage

I got the belly bowl. It was not great. I think the pork made the entire bowl too rich. The soup itself is already pretty strong so adding all this sausage, bacon AND pork belly is just too much. I wouldn’t get this one again.

150621-05

150621-06Karaage Chicken Sandwich ($11) – Served with jalapeño namasu slaw & cilantro mustard. What a deal! My coworker enjoyed it!

150621-07

150621-08Shrimp Gyoza ($11) – comes with edamame avocado puree & ponzu. This dish was okay, nothing special. The avocado puree is….interesting. I wouldn’t get it again.

150621-09

150621-10Pork Belly Bao ($9) – comes with sake hoisin & pickled cucumber. I’m pretty sure $9 was only for two of them, our tables ordered two orders. This was good! Good buns which makes a big difference!

All in all, I think Lucky Belly is more for the young crowd after work. Definitely recommend coming for dinner over lunch. They also don’t take reservations for lunch so I suggest going right when they open if you have a big party. We came with our list of orders ready to go which they appreciated.

I-NABA – Moilili, HI

Hey folks! Sorry, gotta take a short break from blogging about Japan. Especially since the next post is going to be the angry one! Gotta put myself in a zen place until I finish my paper! It’s been so busy at work that I haven’t been able to request vacation time to work on my paper. Luckily my supervisor is very nice in allowing me to take last minute vacation time when I find free time to do so (which right now is NONE). We had a nice lunch today for the office, we celebrated Administrative Professional’s Day in a nice little restaurant. Then a lot of things happened at work and I got mad. Hahaha wish I could elaborate more but I can’t.

For this post, I am sharing a recent lunch at I-NABA. You folks ever been there? It’s an old school soba place on South King Street, they share the same lot as Baskin Robbins and Manabu’s. Great place and I heard they make their own soba noodles so they are great! If you like soba, you won’t regret it! Here are some pictures!

150505-01My friend got soba with natto. She loved it! She got it with the hot broth, you can choose hot or cold.

150505-02I got the special Mentaiko on grated yamaimo served with bonito in a cold broth. It was delicious. My other friend called yamaimo snot before I went out for lunch which was not pleasant as I ate it and remembered that. Hehe, I get what she meant though.

150505-03Here is the edamame rice that comes with the set. It tasted okay, a bit bland.

150505-04Small Order of Tempura. This was delicious! The batter is light and they fried it fresh so it tasted perfectly crispy. I loved it.

Superb Sushi – Kalihi, HI

I know I posted about Superb Sushi before but I can’t stop raving about their food. And I love that the front line person remembers me! It’s very sweet to me, as antisocial that I am. Their sushi is great and their ahi poke is some of the best I’ve tasted. It’s seasoned wonderfully. I also like that they serve up the ahi poke bowl with the spicy sauce on the side – that really works out for people who cannot handle spice. I got their combo this past visit and it was great as always, they serve it up with miso soup. I hope you folks get to give them a try, I highly recommend it!

Agu Ramen – Moilili, HI

This post highlights two visits to Agu Ramen recently. The first visit was on Valentine’s Day and they had very cute little flowers for the day. It was a very nice touch! My last visit, I took two of my little brothers there. They really enjoyed the ramen. I was really unhappy with the service. Our waiter basically ignored me at the end – all I wanted was the bill. He just kept helping everyone around us and avoided my gaze. Why? I would think you would want me out of your hair when we are done. I was very put off and now I don’t want to return for a while. It’s too bad when the wait staff can have such a big influence on wanting to return or not. They are pretty pricey anyway so I’m okay with not going for a while. I will probably come back from Japan ramen’d out anyway.

150325-03Jidori Kawa – Deep fried Chicken Skin. Was it good? Would it be rude to say duh? Duh!

150325-05

150325-06Shio Jidori – I really enjoy this one. The light ramen broth is great!

150325-07My brothers enjoyed it too! They swallowed it up!

150325-08The youngest one likes to put the noodles on a plate and then eat it. It’s a good way to cool down the noodles..hehe

Kakaako Eats

Kakaako has some great places to eat! The art scene is burgeoning there too and it’s so great to see all the art as I drive through the neighborhood. I was a bit disheartened to read about Fishers having to move from their current location, so many changes going on. I also find myself saying, “I remember when…” a lot more lately which is showing my age. Ahh…let’s talk about happy things like food. Hehe…

150323-01

150323-02This is it Bakery & Deli

This is their hot pastrami on whole wheat bread. I am drooling as I look at these pictures. This sandwich is the best pastrami I’ve had mainly because the meat is so nice and fatty. It’s definitely a treat, a luscious treat. They provide a pickle slice and a small scoop of potato salad with this sandwich. I enjoy their potato salad too! And usually, they throw in a small little pastry with your sandwich as a treat.

Tsukenjo

Of course, when I order a plate outside of my comfort zone – I get disappointed! Tsukenjo is known for their Roast Pork plate and that is definitely what I would get next time. I actually saw a picture of their baked salmon plate and that’s what I wanted…but they didn’t have it that day. I ended up getting their miso salmon and it was…junk. Over seasoned and over cooked, I really didn’t enjoy this dish.

Uahi Island Grill – Manoa, HI

Uahi Island Grill started up their food truck at UH Manoa a few months ago and I finally got to give them a try the other week. Their menu is a bit limited but I really wanted to give their kalua pig with kale plate a try. How was it? I thought it was pretty good, what I did wish was that the kale was cooked down a bit more with the kalua pig. Perhaps it was on purpose for them? I know that as vegetables cook down, they lose their nutrients right? Their kalua pig was very flavorful. They offered a papaya salad as the option for your side, I went for it. It was okay too, it didn’t taste great with the kalua pork but it was still good!

Izakaya Naru – Honolulu, HI

Have you been to Izakaya Naru? They’ve been around for a few years but exist in a bit of a non-descript location. They are located in the same building as Sushi King but when they first opened, they had like no signage. I didn’t even know they were a restaurant until I noticed customers inside as the door opened and closed. I seriously thought it was some kind of secret society, lol. This is a sweet place run by sweet Japanese people. Their crowd is a mix of locals and Japanese tourists, they are very artistic. Their menu is handwritten by the staff and if you make a reservation, they hand write your name on a sign. Very nice and personalized touch. The lighting in the place is a bit dim so I apologize in advance for the dark pictures!

150227-01Garlic Fried Rice with Squid – $9.50

The rice was definitely tasty and I liked the little crispy rice on top. Just a bit of a small portion for $10.

150227-02Salmon Carpaccio – I think this was a special for the day. It was good but not something I would order again.

150227-03

150227-04Gyoza Pizza – $8.50

This is one of their signature dishes. Very interesting concept. It’s pretty much the gyoza skin as the crust, topped with gyoza filling and cheese and baked. I think this dish is okay but not great. Definitely something to try once to say you tried it but not something I would want again.

150227-05

150227-06Shoyu Pork Belly – $9.75

First of all, what’s up with the egg?! Japanese restaurants are the very place I expect the egg to be cooked on point. The gray ring was disappointing, not that it stops me from eating it. The pork belly was not great, it definitely could have been more tender than it was. Felt very dry, good thing had the fat to help out the dryness. I wouldn’t order this again.

150227-07Okinawan Sweet Potato & Mochi Ice Cream Parfait – $7.00

Very interesting dessert. I was not a fan at first but I really did enjoy the sweet potato mochi. The title of the dish was a bit deceiving, it’s actually sweet potato mochi so don’t be like me and start looking for separate mochi. They added frosted flakes cereal on the side which really threw me off. It did not go with the dessert and the dessert did not need that. I do actually want the mochi again so that’s a plus.

This is definitely not one of my favorite izakayas. I guess I should try some other dishes next time because the staff are really nice! I had a really nice and refreshing drink and I can’t remember it! Maybe that’s a good excuse to give them one more try…

Sunny Side – Wahiawa, HI

Everytime my cousin comes home to stay, we always play tourists. It’s a nice change of pace and it gives me an excuse to pig out in the North Shore side. I wanted to share a recent breakfast at Sunny Side, they offer some great food and pie! Nice local owned small mom and pop type shop. Isn’t there a street in Wahiawa that is supposed to have Cherry Blossoms? Does anyone know if this street still exists? I would love to visit it if it does!

150225-01

150225-02Fried Rice Special – delicious! The boys love it.

150225-03Portuguese Sausage, Eggs and Rice. I think they ran out of the fried rice special so we had to get this as a substitute!

150225-04Their famous Blueberry Cream Pie. Connie’s favorite! Although, that’s probably just canned blueberry pie filling huh? Still good though!

Sumo Drive-Inn & Catering – Honolulu, HI

I was surprisingly active this past weekend. After weekends of just lounging about lazily, I did some shopping both Saturday and Sunday. I hadn’t been to Waikele in a while so I headed out there on Sunday. I went right when they opened so I scored some good parking on both sides. The traffic going in was horrendous, I guess they’re doing some crazy road work over the weekends heading West. I was all mad driving when I saw two mopeds cruising along. Of course, no helmets. There were cops all over so I was hoping they were getting pulled over. Dangerous for them to be on the freeway!

Anyhoo, our office is always on the look out for new catering options for the different events we run. When Sumo Drive-Inn and Catering opened nearby in the old HK’s spot (you folks remember that place?), we had to check it out! Their bento selection and prices are INSANELY cheap. We went during their soft opening and enjoyed their bentos quite a bit so we are already in business with them for our next event. We also learned that days after we did our office taste test, they have raised their prices. I definitely don’t blame them and whatever price they raised it will probably still be a great deal. I can’t see them raising the prices THAT much. Their website still has all the old prices but there’s no way a place can stay in business with these portions and prices. You’ll see what I mean soon enough…I’ll be listing the prices we paid.

150222-03Regular Bento A ($5.00) – Hoki, Fried Chicken (a whole thigh!), Luncheon Meat, Hot Dog and Egg

150222-04

150222-05Regular Bento B ($5.00) – 2 pcs Fried Chicken, Egg, Luncheon Meat, and Hot Dog

This is the bento I got! Yes, two whole thighs! When I see fried chicken as part of a bento, I assume just nuggets of fried chicken. I was pleasantly surprised to find thighs in here! My complaint was that the chicken was a bit saltier than I would have liked, other than that, I enjoyed it!

150222-06Regular Bento C ($5.00) – Teri Beef, Fried Chicken, Egg and Luncheon Meat

150222-07

150222-08

Regular Bento D ($5.00) – Mochiko Chicken, Egg, Luncheon Meat and Hot Dog

150222-09Regular Bento E ($5.00) – Hoki, Mochiko Chicken and Egg

150222-10Keiki Bento E ($4.00) – 2 pcs Maki Sushi, 1 pc Cone Sushi, Hot Dog, Hoki (half piece), and choice of Mochiko Chicken or 1 pc Fried Chicken (which would be the whole thigh again!). What a deal!!! This diner chose mochiko chicken.

150222-01Yokozuna Bento ($8.00) – 5 pcs Maki Sushi, 1 pc Cone Sushi, Mochiko Chicken, Hoki, Teri Beef, Hot Dog, Egg and Luncheon Meat

What a deal! I should have gotten this one! I would next time, I love that their bentos comes with the choice of maki sushi and cone sushi. We talked to the manager when we were there and he mentioned that when they fully open – they will have a daily menu of over 40 plates to order. I’m pretty stoked to have a place like this by work again – especially on days I just have to get away from on-campus offerings.

Döner Shack – Downtown, HI

Sometimes I get a hankering for Greek food that I just can’t shake. I love lamb, I love tzatziki sauce and I just love all Greek flavors. Döner Shack is located in downtown and has gotten great reviews on Yelp so I decided to give it a try! I saw their rice plates on the page and I was so excited. Then I was super disappointed when I tasted it. Let me explain…

150217-05Chicken Shawarma Rice Plate – $7.50

150217-06

150217-07Lamb Rice Plate $7.50

Everything could have been so perfect, but you (rice) ruined it. The salad was perfect, crisp and refreshing. Great dressing that had a bit of tang but nothing too sour. The lamb was perfectly cooked and seasoned, looks dry in the picture but it wasn’t. The garlic yogurt sauce on top – great! The rice? Here’s what I don’t get in restaurants. How do you mess up rice? This rice was not only undercooked but I could tell it was cooked with too little water. The rice was CRUNCHY. Made me question if they even cooked it at all. It was such a disappointment. I assume I went on an off day because they get such high reviews. It’s hard to get to downtown so I don’t know if I will try this again anytime soon!

150217-08Why oh why!!! This döner was a downer (sorry…).
