To follow up on yesterday’s post, I tried out the Shave Ice placed located right outside of Pioneer Saloon! Monsarrat Ave Shave Ice is literally in the alley between Pioneer Saloon and another place. Very small place and of course located outdoors. Not much place to sit and eat, but it’s okay – just grab your shave ice and go!
Miniatures <3. This is definitely a way to my heart.
Cute little cactus plants – I wish I could get my cacti to flower.
Their syrups are all homemade and they taste great. I got the a mango and lilikoi mix for my shave ice. I actually enjoyed the lilikoi much more than the mango. In the end, it all mixed together anyway and became a good slurpee. Very cute place and great shave ice, give it a try if you’re in the area!
If you ever find yourself in Chicago, you gotta get Garrett Popcorn. It’s a total tourist thing but I know locals love it too! They have a combination of cheese and caramel that’s called the Garrett Mix. I’m a fan of the cheese popcorn only so I just get that. My cousin was nice enough to bring me a pack back! It’s definitely best fresh but still tastes okay a little bit stale. The cheese flavor is unbeatable, so good. The downtown locations always has a line so I would just suggest getting a bag at the airport and resist not eating it all before getting home.
Did everyone have a joyful and restful Christmas? I certainly did. I spent all day sleeping, forreal. I woke up with a too much sleep headache. Have you folks had those before? It’s certainly a first world pain huh? But man, it was a real bad migraine. Took a few hours to shake…but I feel much better now. Christmas was nice, I got more gifts this year than years previous. Yay! The surprise gifts were kitchen gadgets which I love! If you ever find yourself wondering what to get me (and I’m sure you all do), cool kitchen gadgets would be it. I have a few days off and it’s going to be interesting. I’m the kind of person who loves a three day weekend but anything beyond it that doesn’t include traveling drives me stir crazy. I do have things to do but gosh…I think I’m still recovering from the worst semester ever. I need a mental holiday. Anyway, here are a few pics to share from yesterday! I also made madeleines for my friend for Christmas! He enjoyed it, I’ll share a recipe very soon!
Thanks Linda! She showed me a video of this before and then she got it for me for Christmas! I’m interested to give it a whirl! Get it? Wait…did I get that right?
My friend Kristian never disappoints with his wrapping skills. Look at this! He made like a suitcase out of my present! And the cute little air mail card? IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS. I loved it! Thanks bro!
So this is what I got! A drawing set! Yes, I would love to start drawing. I’ve always admired people who could draw, wish I could! I really wish I could draw comics…funny huh?
Just wanted to share a centerpiece from a recent Christmas party! Isn’t that the cutest? They put this together! The doll was bought from a store but the bottom base was homemade…it was so cute! It was a very generous donation to the party and everyone who received one, LOVED it. It was a great party!
Gosh you guys. I wanted to update this blog earlier this afternoon but I ran into a mishap! WordPress asked me to do an update which I did…and it cause my whole blog to crash! I’ve spent hours trying to read through support forums and finally was able to fix it for now by replacing one obscure file…it was all too much. I’m just happy I was able to access my blog again to do an update! So last weekend was full-on hibernation mode. I had two final papers due this past week and I am happy to report that I was able to submit both. Thank god. I do plan on taking class again next semester but just one course this time. I’ve got a lot of updating to do! My cousin is back from school again so it has been nice visiting with her. Just a quick update tonight – including another great plate from Toshi’s Delicatessen & Restaurant. If this place ever closes down, I’ll be super sad. They are definitely one of the last old school ones left – they can’t close down ever!
My view the past few weeks.
Yes! This is the way to wrap plates!
I got a bunch on my plate; saba, teri burger, tofu and their famous chow fun.
The saba is great, great piece of fish. Had bones so if you get it, be careful. They also let you choose which part of the fish you. The tofu is so flavorful, I loved it. The burger patty was a burger patty, what can I say? But it is definitely homemade so that’s a plus.
Chow fun! I think I’m going to ask for like at least 2 servings next time. I’m a carb-o-holic. Hope you all are doing well!
Want to find a way to be productive? I suggest taking classes. To avoid doing my paper yesterday, I was very productive with my other tasks! As long as I am doing something I feel like I am doing okay. My main concern with my paper was that I didn’t have a real direction of where I was going. Last night at about 9:30 pm, I had a stroke of genius (okay maybe not genius) so I started typing away. I wish I was more thoughtful about it because now I just have a whole lot of text that I have to rearrange and edit down which can be even harder. Anyway, something is better than nothing! I woke up early today and it was so chilly! I loved it. I did laundry and here I am updating my blog because I am avoiding my paper once again.
I’m counting down! 2 more weeks to go. I plan to take just one class next semester but it’s going to be heavy material so I’m hoping it can help me concentrate on what I need to learn. Have you folks finished your holiday shopping yet? All I can say is, thank god for Amazon. I can’t wait to start up cooking again. Hope you folks have a wonderful Sunday. Quick random pics…
I’ve been on a Nigella Lawson watching binge lately (sorry Darren). I actually just leave her on in the background while I do my paper. I don’t pay too much attention, I just like hearing her voice and the jazzy background music. But what I do LOVE is the whisk she uses! It just looks so cool and effective, it’s definitely for a smaller amount of liquid but I’m sure it’s great for gravies, eggs, etc. I found it on Amazon and bought it for about 7 bucks, not a bad deal!
Butter mochi I made recently. I didn’t realize how many variations there were for butter mochi recipes! This one definitely came out more cake-like which I thought was okay. I liked that it had a good crust on top. I made it as a bribe to my class on our group presentation day…lol. They enjoyed it, it was cleaned out!
You know what I also love about Sundays? My favorite Korean shows are uploaded onto YouTube. I love watching 2 Days 1 Night and The Return of Superman and am so happy KBS provides subtitled shows for free! The Return of Superman is a show about celebrity dads who watch their kids for 48 hours alone, my current favorite is the three triplets and Song Il Gook! This little clip just encapsulates how cute they are. If you’re not patient enough to watch the entire clip, at least watch from 7:25 to watch them fight and make up, it’s just too cute! The whole clip is just too much cute.
I know I know, two weeks too late. I stayed at work until about 6 pm on Halloween to finish up some things and boy was that a mistake. I sat in traffic for almost an hour. It doesn’t sound that bad, but the drive to my place is about 7-10 minutes so it was ridiculous. Every road I turned to was backed up, I should have just taken the freeway. Then I get home and it’s late, I’m cranky from traffic and it’s raining. I promised my brothers I would take them trick or treating but as we walked out – it started to pour. I let out an exasperated sigh and asked if I could just buy them candy and make it a day. They agreed. (THANK YOU LORD). So Longs got a hold of my wallet that night but it was so worth it. Anyway, just wanted to share some Halloween themed items I took part in that weekend!
Centerpiece for a Halloween Party – I thought it was very cute! Creative and cute, I loved it.
Dessert from Little Oven. Here is the graveyard ice cream sandwiches. Cute huh?
Franken Fluff – a chocolate brownie topped with homemade marshmallow fluff. Yum!
Bloody Lemonade
This was a special for the Halloween weekend. I figured it would be strawberry lemonade but it was actually lemonade with grenadine. Pretty right? How was it? Um…SWEET. Like SUPER SWEET. Like I kept adding water upon water to the drink to make it bearable. I think I must have added at least half a cup of water to make it normal.
As a college student, I have been indulging in eating out way too much. But I’ll be damned if I have time to cook anything these days. So I’ve been getting very familiar with 711’s everchanging assortment of food. I am also super sick of fast food and can’t wait to start cooking again. I can’t wait for this semester to be over…haha. But I do enjoy taking the classes and my classmates are all pretty cool this semester! They look like they are all part of the same starting core group so I would like to continue taking classes with them if I can. You know what that means…
Anyway, quick post about some foods I tried recently.
I’m a sucker for meat in gravy. Loco Moco is one of my favorite dishes. How was this? Not bad. I don’t know what the obsession with putting fried rice in these dishes are. I mean there’s so much going on up top that I don’t see a point in putting a seasoned starch underneath. I’d rather have this with white rice.
I saw this and just had to try it. The pork hash looked a lot like spam which is a bit unnatural…haha. How was it? Well I can say that it was not memorable, not great but not bad. I rather just go for the spam musubi because it’s cheaper anyway.
This post is for Jalna. I saw her post about the incredible apple juice she bought from Marukai and it had me salivating. I went to Don Quijote the next day for a usual run and ran to the juice section to look for it. Eureka I thought when I found something that looked very similar…and even more score…it was only $5.99! One dollar off! I bought it and chilled it to try later in the day. It tasted…good. Apple-y. But when I looked back at her post, I realized it was a completely different brand! So I’m thinking we didn’t get the same thing…so now I will have to keep the one she talked about in my sights because she made it sound so good!
Hey y’all. Did you guys get the big downfall about an hour ago? Felt like it came outta nowhere yeah?? Today was Monday and it was pretty busy. I went into work on both Saturday and Sunday to get some work done and the no air conditioning did me more bad than good. I got nothing done! And look at me here tonight. I’ve done no homework tonight. I’ve mainly been prepping my old iPhone to give to my Dad. I’m a bit afraid of what he will do to it but it is time for him to move up and away from the flip phones. I had class tonight and we started watching a really interesting documentary, I was sad that class was over before the documentary ended! Who ever says they were sad class ended yeah?
Anyway, as I mentioned – last week was the anniversary of my mom’s passing. I drove out to Kaneohe in the morning and bought her some nice flowers. It was a nice trip and it was nice visiting her and putting out the flowers. I forgot about the wetness of Kaneohe and walked around in slippers, big mistake. I got back to work at a pretty good time, I didn’t have traffic both ways! Well, I hope you folks have a great week!
As I was finishing up my laundry today, it started to pour and I loved it! I do love rain, when I’m not getting soaked in it. I looked at my phone and it read rain all day. It is totally clear and sunny now. That’s Hawaii for you. I do hope we get more rainy days soon, mainly so it won’t be so HOT. I had a pretty okay week. It was busy but am glad for the rest. This week is the death anniversary of my mother so I plan to take some time off to visit her. Gosh, death anniversary sounds so terrible. Isn’t there another word for it? It wouldn’t be memorial day right? Anyway, I just wanted to share a mish mash of pictures today. Hope you folks have had a good weekend so far!
I love cute plant arrangements like this. When my kitchen is done, I would like to place something similar to this on my window sill. Perhaps herbs as well! By the way, this is from Mr. Tea Cafe. I tried their bubble tea with 100% sweetness, I was not happy at all. I cannot recommend this place even though they have cute plants! The balls were hard, the drink was not sweet enough…Thang II is still the best in Hawaii.
Our Campus Center had an open house and I got to try some of their catering options! See the neon stuff on the left? That’s actually mashed potatoes infused with beet. I’m assuming beet puree. How was it? Ehh…a bit weird. You could totally taste the beet in the mashed potato…I liked that they tried it but I think it could be done better. The asparagus was good and the salmon was great!
This was some kind of moroccan chicken with lemon. Strong lemon taste. It was good though! I just wish their catering prices weren’t so high…
