This and That

Hey folks! Boy it was nice having some trade winds this weekend. I wish we had weather like this all the time, would make Hawai’i perfect. Well I’ve had a sweet tooth for the past few days, it gets like this every month if you get my drift. I hope your team won the Superbowl today but it looks like a majority of my feeds were mad about the win. Just wanted to share a hodgepodge of updates today!

150201-01Remember when I shared my thoughts on these feet soaks in the past? I’ve tried the Nature Republic pack before in this post. I’ve been looking for it ever since but it’s like they stopped making it! Or stopped shipping them here. So I finally decided to try The Face Shop version. It was pricier and less effective. How disappointing. There definitely was peeling but nowhere as much as Nature Republic. I do not recommend this.

150201-03

150201-04Sorry to follow that with a picture of food. I tried this last week from 7-11. Sounded good. It tasted okay, nothing special. Also had a stick of takuan in it…which was nice for the crunch.

150201-02Full bloom! Yay! The buds all bloomed beautifully. Now I have to start cutting off the dead flowers. A bit sad but I really enjoyed it as it bloomed. Not sure how to care for this post bloom. I think I read somewhere that I am supposed to cut down the main stems down and keep it as a regular plant. If I take good care of it, I think it blooms again next winter! I guess we will see! The stems and blooms got so heavy that I had to tape them all together.

Red Lion Amaryllis

My shop of choice? Target. My mission? Clearance items. I love when major holidays are over because that means all the seasonal items go on sale! I found this awesome red lion amaryllis bulb kit from Target on clearance for $8! I thought having the vase/pot was good enough! I’ve never had a green thumb so I figured I would kill this plant before it bloomed. To my surprise, I have nurtured it to fruition! I planted it around new years and it is currently blooming. It is so beautiful! I can’t believe I nurtured it to this point! I just wanted to share (brag) about it today.

150126-01Wish I took a picture of it when it was just a bulb in the soil. Look at how tall it gets! I am in awe each time I come home from work.

150126-02

150126-03Exciting!

150126-04Boom! Beauty shot. Here is the first bloom, isn’t it beautiful??

150126-05I’ll probably share again once the other ones bloom as well!

Happy Saturday!

I hope you folks get to go out and have some fun this weekend! I just wanted to share some pictures of Waimanalo Beach Park. This was my first time at this beach and it was fantastic! A nice parking lot, clean beach….and not at all crowded! It was great! I would love to get back here soon.

Happy Saturday everyone!

Times Supermarket Poke Bowl – Kaimuki, HI

I have been on a posting spree this week! But now I am using up all the pictures I have! I need to slow it down, will try to update a couple times a week still. I know I have been spending up a storm this holiday season. I am broke like a joke. I also had to pay my car registration this month so I am beyond broke. I have been pretty productive with my days off! I’ve rested but I have also tried to be productive each day no matter how long that productivity lasts. It has been helpful that the weather has been cool – that helps a lot! I have to return to work on Monday. Ugh…now I’m going to miss the days off. I think I mentioned it already but I plan to take one class in Spring so it shouldn’t be that bad this semester.

So Times has jumped onto the poke bowl frenzy! I believe they offer either 1/4 pound or 1/2 pound on rice. Then I think there’s a difference between previously frozen and fresh – I actually get pretty confused. The first time I ordered it at the Liliha location, the guy was not patient at all. They had their menu on this big screen TV that kept rotating so I stood there forever waiting for it to come back, that was irritating. The Kaimuki location recently renovated to add their poke section and this guy was much nicer. He was patient and explained everything. I decided to go for the mixed bowl and if I remember correctly, if you do mix, you cannot do it with like a fresh and previously frozen. I think you gotta do it with all previously frozen, ah something like that. It’s confusing like I said. I went for the hamachi and spicy ahi, it was GOOD! Check out the pictures.

150104-01

They are super meticulous about the weight. Like he spent a lot of time adding and subtracting single chunks of fish. I actually didn’t mind that because it means they are consistent with what they serve out.

150104-02Yummy hamachi! Look at that marbling, this was so good. Who cares if it was previously frozen??

150104-03I can never pass up spicy ahi, I don’t know why. Theirs was pretty good! I think their poke section opens after I start work so I wouldn’t be able to pick some up for lunch on work days. Foodland’s poke section opens pretty early…hopefully Times decides to change their times. Give them a try, the Kaimuki one at least.

Happy 2015!

As you read this, it will be the new year! Now I have to get used to writing 15 instead of 14, oh what a bother. Do you folks make resolutions for every year? I don’t. And it’s good that I don’t because I seem to unconsciously rebel against anything I’m told to do, and that includes myself telling me to do something. It’s a bit weird I know. I think I’m just allergic to prescribed things…I do like to be somewhat spontaneous. What I can do is strive to be a good person and hope that others do the same.

It has been so cold in Hawaii lately and I just love it. I’m going to miss it so much when we go back to hot and humid weather. Sometimes I try to get away with t-shirt and shorts still (that rebellion bubbling up again) but I am sitting here in layers as I type up this entry. I hope you all have a great 2015, stay safe and eat well! I’ll leave you with yet another meal at Izakaya Torae Torae (each word links to a former entry).

150101-04Spicy Tuna Bowl

150101-05Sake – A MUST if you go here. It’s perfection.

150101-01

150101-02I end this post with a Stamina Bowl for you to start the new year! This was a great bowl, and something I probably would never get just a few years ago. Slime factor times 2! Natto and Okra – so good. This was a great bowl! I needed that bowl to finish my papers last semester – I think it did the trick!

Monsarrat Ave Shave Ice – Diamond Head, HI

To follow up on yesterday’s post, I tried out the Shave Ice placed located right outside of Pioneer Saloon! Monsarrat Ave Shave Ice is literally in the alley between Pioneer Saloon and another place. Very small place and of course located outdoors. Not much place to sit and eat, but it’s okay – just grab your shave ice and go!

141231-01Miniatures <3. This is definitely a way to my heart.

141231-02Cute little cactus plants – I wish I could get my cacti to flower.

141231-03Their syrups are all homemade and they taste great. I got the a mango and lilikoi mix for my shave ice. I actually enjoyed the lilikoi much more than the mango. In the end, it all mixed together anyway and became a good slurpee. Very cute place and great shave ice, give it a try if you’re in the area!

Garrett Popcorn

141229-01If you ever find yourself in Chicago, you gotta get Garrett Popcorn. It’s a total tourist thing but I know locals love it too! They have a combination of cheese and caramel that’s called the Garrett Mix. I’m a fan of the cheese popcorn only so I just get that. My cousin was nice enough to bring me a pack back! It’s definitely best fresh but still tastes okay a little bit stale. The cheese flavor is unbeatable, so good. The downtown locations always has a line so I would just suggest getting a bag at the airport and resist not eating it all before getting home.

Happy Holidays!

Did everyone have a joyful and restful Christmas? I certainly did. I spent all day sleeping, forreal. I woke up with a too much sleep headache. Have you folks had those before? It’s certainly a first world pain huh? But man, it was a real bad migraine. Took a few hours to shake…but I feel much better now. Christmas was nice, I got more gifts this year than years previous. Yay! The surprise gifts were kitchen gadgets which I love! If you ever find yourself wondering what to get me (and I’m sure you all do), cool kitchen gadgets would be it. I have a few days off and it’s going to be interesting. I’m the kind of person who loves a three day weekend but anything beyond it that doesn’t include traveling drives me stir crazy. I do have things to do but gosh…I think I’m still recovering from the worst semester ever. I need a mental holiday. Anyway, here are a few pics to share from yesterday! I also made madeleines for my friend for Christmas! He enjoyed it, I’ll share a recipe very soon!

141226-01Thanks Linda! She showed me a video of this before and then she got it for me for Christmas! I’m interested to give it a whirl! Get it? Wait…did I get that right?

141226-02My friend Kristian never disappoints with his wrapping skills. Look at this! He made like a suitcase out of my present! And the cute little air mail card? IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS. I loved it! Thanks bro!

141226-03So this is what I got! A drawing set! Yes, I would love to start drawing. I’ve always admired people who could draw, wish I could! I really wish I could draw comics…funny huh?

141226-04Just wanted to share a centerpiece from a recent Christmas party! Isn’t that the cutest? They put this together! The doll was bought from a store but the bottom base was homemade…it was so cute! It was a very generous donation to the party and everyone who received one, LOVED it. It was a great party!

Fatal Error Fixed!

Gosh you guys. I wanted to update this blog earlier this afternoon but I ran into a mishap! WordPress asked me to do an update which I did…and it cause my whole blog to crash! I’ve spent hours trying to read through support forums and finally was able to fix it for now by replacing one obscure file…it was all too much. I’m just happy I was able to access my blog again to do an update! So last weekend was full-on hibernation mode. I had two final papers due this past week and I am happy to report that I was able to submit both. Thank god. I do plan on taking class again next semester but just one course this time. I’ve got a lot of updating to do! My cousin is back from school again so it has been nice visiting with her. Just a quick update tonight – including another great plate from Toshi’s Delicatessen & Restaurant. If this place ever closes down, I’ll be super sad. They are definitely one of the last old school ones left – they can’t close down ever!

141221-01My view the past few weeks.

141221-02Yes! This is the way to wrap plates!

141221-04I got a bunch on my plate; saba, teri burger, tofu and their famous chow fun.

141221-03The saba is great, great piece of fish. Had bones so if you get it, be careful. They also let you choose which part of the fish you. The tofu is so flavorful, I loved it. The burger patty was a burger patty, what can I say? But it is definitely homemade so that’s a plus.

141221-05Chow fun! I think I’m going to ask for like at least 2 servings next time. I’m a carb-o-holic. Hope you all are doing well!

2 Weeks to Go!

Want to find a way to be productive? I suggest taking classes. To avoid doing my paper yesterday, I was very productive with my other tasks! As long as I am doing something I feel like I am doing okay. My main concern with my paper was that I didn’t have a real direction of where I was going. Last night at about 9:30 pm, I had a stroke of genius (okay maybe not genius) so I started typing away. I wish I was more thoughtful about it because now I just have a whole lot of text that I have to rearrange and edit down which can be even harder. Anyway, something is better than nothing! I woke up early today and it was so chilly! I loved it. I did laundry and here I am updating my blog because I am avoiding my paper once again.

I’m counting down! 2 more weeks to go. I plan to take just one class next semester but it’s going to be heavy material so I’m hoping it can help me concentrate on what I need to learn. Have you folks finished your holiday shopping yet? All I can say is, thank god for Amazon. I can’t wait to start up cooking again. Hope you folks have a wonderful Sunday. Quick random pics…

141207-02I’ve been on a Nigella Lawson watching binge lately (sorry Darren). I actually just leave her on in the background while I do my paper. I don’t pay too much attention, I just like hearing her voice and the jazzy background music. But what I do LOVE is the whisk she uses! It just looks so cool and effective, it’s definitely for a smaller amount of liquid but I’m sure it’s great for gravies, eggs, etc. I found it on Amazon and bought it for about 7 bucks, not a bad deal!

141207-01Butter mochi I made recently. I didn’t realize how many variations there were for butter mochi recipes! This one definitely came out more cake-like which I thought was okay. I liked that it had a good crust on top. I made it as a bribe to my class on our group presentation day…lol. They enjoyed it, it was cleaned out!

You know what I also love about Sundays? My favorite Korean shows are uploaded onto YouTube. I love watching 2 Days 1 Night and The Return of Superman and am so happy KBS provides subtitled shows for free! The Return of Superman is a show about celebrity dads who watch their kids for 48 hours alone, my current favorite is the three triplets and Song Il Gook! This little clip just encapsulates how cute they are. If you’re not patient enough to watch the entire clip, at least watch from 7:25 to watch them fight and make up, it’s just too cute! The whole clip is just too much cute.
