First Birthday Party

I went to a First Birthday Party this past weekend at Willows and it was wonderful!  I wanted to share some awesome pictures of how the party was set-up.  Mommy put in a lot of work to create a wonderful experience for her son so I wanted to share the results!  My next post will concentrate on the food we had at Willows.  So you are all warned, this post is full of pictures and mostly of decorations.  🙂   Graphic heavy!

Satisfries

So there was a bit of news when Burger King released their Satisfries.  They apparently spent 10 years researching on how to make like the perfect french fry which is supposed to have lower fat and tastes great.  I was excited mainly because they were serving crinkle fries.  I’ll take crinkle fries over regular fries any day.  So how did they fare?

131117-02Okay I just realized how unappetizing this picture looks – but the fries taste great!  I thought they did a good job!  Unfortunately these satisfries do not automatically come with the meals, they serve the regular fries!  So yeah, you have to pay to upgrade to these babies.

Here’s what got me the most!  I don’t know if you can make it out in the picture but it says that these are for a limited time only.  WHAT??  They spent 10 years to come up with these and they are only going to offer it for a limited time?  I don’t know what to say.  Maybe they are testing the waters – I hope it succeeds cause I thought they tasted great!

Recipe: Pumpkin Cinnamon Roll Sheet Cake

Happy Halloween…2 weeks ago!  Nah, it’s okay.  It’s still autumn so this dessert still works!  Our division held a Halloween party which included an autumn dessert contest.  As the representative for my office, I took on the challenge and WON!  Yay!  Okay so there were only two desserts entered…but a win is a win.  I shall take it.  I’m not used to eating too many autumn desserts but I think this one came out pretty nice!  Check out the pictures and the recipe inside this post!

Ahi & Vegetable

Sometimes I have to go to downtown for meetings and I always look forward to it!  I used to work in downtown over 10 years ago (scary!) and all you downtowners know, the food is awesome there!  Well aside from Kalihi right?  Fort Street Mall is one of the biggest winners.  One of the mainstays of Fort Street Mall is Rada’s Piroscki.  I don’t know if anyone remembers them but they were a super hole in the wall place run by some really efficient older Filipino ladies that sold the best pirosckis and fried squid.  Well they moved locations since then but I was so happy to see they still exist.  It looks like they combined kitchens with a Filipino restaurant.  I cannot express how disappointed I was when I tried it this time.  The filling was still good but the pastry covering it was terrible.  It tasted like rancid oil, really rancid oil.  I even bought one for my coworker and told her she had to try it!  My credibility was slashed!  If anyone of you do frequent Rada’s, please tell me it was a bad day!

Anyhow, for lunch this day – I decided to go to Ahi & Vegetable.  This place wasn’t there when I used to work in downtown but they run a super great shop!  Great raw fish sets for a good price and the staff is so fast!  I just wanted to share the lunch I got.  Jalna will laugh again, here goes:

Spicy Ahi and Natto combo!  Hahaha it was so good.  This place is run by a Korean owner so they included Korean seasoned choy sum.  Yum!  And yes, this was very good!  I didn’t mix the two together though, that would be pretty weird.  Our coworker was laughing at me too wondering how I could get into natto so late when people usually grow up eating it.  I should just become a walking ad for natto.  Now I have two co-workers who are constantly eating natto…lol

Kunio Restaurant – Waikele, HI

Kunio Restaurant is a great Japanese restaurant located in Waikele Shopping Center.  If you go during the weekends, you will see a long line at both ends – Genki and Kunio.  Kunio is a great restaurant in Waikele and honestly, the dining options are slim pickings at Waikele…sorry!  Kunio is a comfortable Japanese restaurant that serves up some great teishoku deals.  Also, we’ve had great customer service both times!  That’s winners for me already…check out the food pics!

Miso Butterfish and Shrimp Tempura/Squid Tempura Combo!  The butterfish is in the bottom left square, looks koge huh?

Pretz – Okonomiyaki

I wish Pretz would release all their weird flavors here in Hawaii.  Or let me back up, I wish Japan would release all their weird everything here in Hawaii.  I get such a laugh out of some of their products.  Maybe it’s more that I wish Don Quijote would just ship them in!  My coworker gave me a box of these Pretz to try and boy are they interesting.  Okonomiyaki flavor!  So how did they taste?  Surprisingly, a lot like okonomiyaki!  But an aritificial okonomiyaki taste, maybe like how a sauce packet for an instant okonomiyaki would taste like.  Very concentrated flavor.

131113-02Flavors from left to right: Wasabi, Okonomiyaki, Ichigo (Strawberry), Jyagabadaa (Japanese for baked potato!), Mentaiko, and Takoyaki!  Which flavor would you want to taste most?

Coffee Hour

So I shared my Hawaiian Style Breakfast Casserole recipe last week, now I just wanted to share the rest of the goodies from the coffee hour!  Graphic heavy!

131112-01Buttery Vanilla Bundt Cake – my favorite dessert of the day!  It’s like a vanilla version of Kahlua Cake.  Have you folks had kahlua cake?  It’s like eating the most moist chocolate cake ever.  Maybe I’ll share more pics of kahlua cake later!

Cold Weather!

See what happens when I don’t schedule out posts?  I apologize.  Last week was just a cluster of things that happened so I couldn’t update my blog.  I apologize!  I don’t apologize for you having to see portuguese sausage all week long because that’s the best sausage in the world.  Haha…just kidding.  I really am sorry.  How did you folks like the weekend’s weather?  I personally like cold and rainy weather so I LOVED it.  Luckily the rain dried up today so I was able to hang out my laundry.  Three day weekend – I hope everyone had a good one.  I attended an awesome 1st birthday party and like totally cleaned up my place!  I’ve been staring at my old desktop for years and finally sat down and tore that sucker open to grab my hard drive.  It was a struggle but I got it!  Best Buy takes in computers for free recycling, isn’t that great?  So I dropped it off…then I hammered the life out of my hard drive this morning.  This is one crazy post.  I’m going to work on some updates tonight for posting!  For now, please enjoy a picture from Korea.

Recipe: Hawaiian Style Breakfast Casserole

Anytime we have a coffee hour at work – people tend to bring all the same types of foods.  Either pastries or fruits.  I’m a bigger fan of savory foods so when I have to bring something – I always try to find something salty to bring!  One day, I spotted these portuguese sausage slices in Costco made exclusively for musubis and an idea clicked in my head.  Here’s what came of it…

Hawaiian Style Breakfast Casserole – this dish was a complete winner at the pot luck.  I think people enjoyed having something salty to eat in a sea of pastries.  So easy yet so delicious.  I’ll include my recipe in this post.  🙂

Taiyo Ramen – Honolulu, HI

Taiyo Ramen has been a late night staple in Hawai’i for so long.  Do you folks remember when it used to be on Kapiolani where Nordstrom is now?  I must sound like one real old fogie saying that.  I’ve been saying a lot of things that make me old already.  Naming prices of what things used to be…talking about how music and movies are not good anymore.  Oh boy.  Where was I?  That’s right, Taiyo Ramen!  My favorite dish from there is definitely the kimchee fried rice.  I hate to brag but I think I make the best kimchee fried rice (lol) but if I had to buy it outside, it’s definitely from Taiyo.  Kimchee fried is one of those dishes that doesn’t seem to have a consistent recipe – every time I try it outside, it’s always different…either too sweet or not enough spice.  Anyhow, I came here a few weeks ago and was happy to see that things are still pretty much the same.  It’s a funny set up for a “Japanese” restaurant, it’s a ramen shop that sells kimchee fried rice.  The wait staff are all Korean so the TV plays KBFD (which I like), the kitchen staff are all Chinese!  Talk about getting a mixed plate, no complaints here though.  Let’s get to the pictures!
